What is considered a Hit?

Ok, i havent found it anywhere in the books, and after trying to come up with a good fighter this doubt got me...

What exactly is considered a hit?

When a Fgt uses a cleave and hits, i can see that as 1 hit.

But what if the fighter activates Rain of Steel (Daily level 5) (Considering he picked Battlerager as his build) does he get +THP whenever an enemy starts hit turn adjacent to him (taking 1[W] damage)?

That doubt also works for Cleric's Spirit of healing (Daily utility 6)

Another doubt about Rain of steel is, If a character is using a +2 Longsword, the damage is 1d8 or 1d8+2?

thanks for clearing my noobish doubts off :D

You can only hit if you make an attack roll and roll equal to or higher then the targets defense.

When you make an attack roll, you either hit or miss. See PHB rules for attack rolls (somewhere around p280)

Rain of Steel makes no attack rolls, so it never hits.

As a 'Weapon' tagged power making a damage roll, Rain of Steel does gain the +2 from enhancement, as well as possible other bonuses (weapon focus, etc)

"Every power that requires an attack roll includes a "Hit" entry, which explains what happens when an attack roll succeeds." - PHB, page 57

A hit is when an attack roll succeeds.

Yes, that is one hit.

Rain of Steel does not count as a successful hit, since it does not have an attack roll.

That doubt also works for Cleric's Spirit of healing (Daily utility 6)

Spirit of Healing requires a hit, which requires a successful attack roll.

Another doubt about Rain of steel is, If a character is using a +2 Longsword, the damage is 1d8 or 1d8+2?

The +2 would be included, as enhancement to damage is added whenever [W] damage is applied.

"Yes, that is one hit.

Clarifying for Colosimus - But only on the target. The additional adjacent enemy may take damage, but he is not subject to anything that requires a Hit (or, indeed, an attack).

For example, a Fighter is fighting an Elf Scout and an Elf Archer. He attacks the Elf Scout with Cleave, and Hits, and thus deals damage to the adjacent Elf Archer. The Elf Archer's "Not So Close" ability, which triggers "when an enemy makes a melee attack against the elf archer", doesn't apply; even though the Fighter dealt damage to the Archer, he didn't make a melee attack against the Archer, nor did he achieve a Hit against the Archer.

Ok, so if a dragonborn uses his breath weapon and manages to hit 5 enemies within the blast and is adjacent to the cleric's healing spirit gets its effect x 5
correct?

From a legalese standpoint i can totally get why rain of steel would not be a hit. From a basic understanding of semantics however, it completely eludes me.

Why did I take damage if I was not hit by anything?

The fighter totally hit you with a weapon. But his power did not apply a Hit: entry.
