Ye old Birthright

Necronomicus

First Post
I'm about to purchase the Birthright Campaign Setting Boxed Set online and intend to run it as a long-term campaign. I know a friend of mine did that with me and some friends a long while back (over ten years ago) and it went smooth and all, but with me being a lesser DM I wonder if anyone else has done this. Any advice? Any extra resources I might need?

I'm about to go over 2nd Edition AD&D again and try to understand it all again.

Ahh! Birthright!

What a great setting! We played for years and years; it's my longest run campaing ever! My players loved it so much that they still talks about it even if we stopped playing a few years ago.

If you run a game there is think "Blood Enemy" it's a must! The awnsheghliens are the final enemies of the setting and the Gorgon in particular. With the campaing setting and that you are ready to go. The regional supplement are a nice addition (I guess there were 4 of them to cover the entire continent).

The background story was simple but elegant with lots of ideas for adventures. The bloodlines give a nice "highlander" feels!

Highly suggest it!

Yeah, I'm probably going to buy the campaign set tomorrow (won't get it for about a week or so, I'm betting) and when my financial aid check gets in I'll get the regional books. Got the download of the Blood Enemy.

I talked to Arjan (B.net administrator) some weeks ago: the hard disk died and the server where B.net was hosted is moving, so until the move finishes everything will continue down :(

A pitty, it was a great source of Birthright information (but I hope it will come back online).

remember Birthright may have been released during the 2edADnD days, but it ain't really all 2edADnD. it has its own twists.

have you tried the waybackmachine to look up the old birthright.net stuff?

I posted an overview of IMO worthwhile Birthright resources a while back here:

If you're going to use the Player's Option books, Dragon #247 has the Birthright-specific rules. I'd recommend going for the "core" 2e experience though.

Let your players read the Atlas of Cerilia (included in the box) to get a feel for the setting and what their characters know.

One thing you'll have to keep an eye on are the bloodlines, as some of the blood abilities they grant can unbalance the game very quickly IME. Putting a cap on starting characters' bloodline strengths is one possible solution.

Finally, Birthright was supposed to be a low-magic setting (regarding the frequency of magic items and number of wizards), although not all authors seemed to have gotten that memo. So don't be afraid to remove magic items from NPC write-ups and such if it doesn't fit the flavor, and use monsters that can only be hit by magic weapons sparingly.

Have fun DMing and playing. :)
