A 4e "fix" book...

Ok, so I was wondering, if WOTC did another round of forum lingering and feedback and decided to create a suppliment to 4e to address some concerns, what would it look like in oreder for you to buy it and impliment it in some way?

Rules:

1) Even though I'm calling it a "fix" book, errata is not to be included, nor anything that overrides existing rules. That's getting into 4.5 territory, and I'm pretty sure WOTC wants to avoid that.

2) The ideas in the book should be easily put in and pulled out as needed without too much manipulation. A good example of this would be the "profession feats" PDF that's been floating around here.

I guess I'll get started.

I would like an alternate skill list, one that more easily reflects the skills in 3.5. With specific skills in a subset of 4e large skills. It seems that such a thing would encourage roleplaying in those who feel like 4e left them in the cold. I don't think it would be too tough to impliment, as this new skill list would still include the old ones, just allow for more refinement. As I'm writing this, I'm actually thinking of a way this could be done very easily.

Example: Thievery is your 4e skill (good one cause it has a lot of subskills.) For the sake of argument, let's say the subskills are: Pick Pocket, Pick Lock, Disarm Trap, Disguise.

For every "X" point(s) in the Thievery General skill, you also add "Y" to any subskill... or something.

Anyway, that's the kind of thing I'm looking for. Now to work out that skill tree idea...

I think a new Unearthed Arcana, fully integrated into the Character Builder and Adventure Tools would be great.

They could put in some of the most common house rules, like all those "Reduced Monster HP / Increased Damage) rules, I would love a solid crafting system etc.

Actually, I fully expected parts of DMG2 to be something like this, even previews suggested that. I was really supprised to see the very limited amount of Divine/Legendary Boons.

So, yeah, I would be much more interested in a book full of well made, fully developed houserules and alternative systems I can add to my game without rendering the Character Builder useless than a true update.

QFT. Though I was surprised that UA was not mentioned in the OP, since that was clearly hinted at.

Cue chorus of old-schoolers chastising you with "why don´t you create your houserules yourself as Gary intended!!1." You can silence them by pointing at AU/UA.

Please answer the following two questions:

a) How is a longer skill list a fix and
b) How does a longer skill list lead to more roleplaying? Because i play the Dark Eye, and believe me, that skill list is as long as your arm. No improvement or detriment in roleplaying, though.

I think the argument is that, if a basketweaving skill is on the list, some players will be tempted to take it, and then will try harder to apply basketweaving to various situations. And that's roleplaying? Maybe? OK, I can't follow the argument either.

Maybe it's that actually investing character resources into less effective skills and making yourself weaker proves that you care about having a realistic character, like the old "roleplaying vs. ROLLplaying" canard.

How about we don't spend our time trying to dismiss people with stereotypes before we hear their points, hm?

I'd like to see alternate rules for martial characters to make them less vancian. For instance, Fighters could use their Encounter powers as often as they want, but each successive use in the same encounter would be at -2, then -4, then -6, etc. Dailies could be reused as well, but at -4, -8, 12, etc.

Or maybe just add a recharge mechanism for martial Encounters and Dailies, triggered by critting, or felling an opponent, or something.

(On another note, maybe its just the threads I've been reading, but does it seem to anyone else like the edition war rhetoric is getting worse lately? Why take a pot shot at "old schoolers" for no damn reason? Weird.)

It's winter in the Northern Hemisphere. We are cold and we need to get our blood boiling to warm up.

I support the AU/UA suggestion and have it added to the character builder.

I know that others out there want more rules that affect role-playing. I personally do not miss these but there was defiantly a vocal group that wanted this (at least at the beginning.. And possible still on the WoTC forums).

I'd like to see an UA as well, my own house rules for 4E are only three pages, but by the time I was done with 3.5 my set for those had hit 70 (including campaign specific prestige classes). I'm always interested in more options. -Q.
