Laptops - What programs or resources do you use to help you run or play your games?

I use OneNote for everything, I have a big notebook called Campaign and there I have several sections where I take notes: campaign plots, adventures, session tracking,...

Google Docs for my campaign notes, tracking of what happens and combat, Picassa for my encounters (I export monsters from the MB as JPEG files and put them in folders by encounter). I used to have egg.timer running as well (my players have 20 sec to decide on what to do), but I have outsourced that a player and his Iphone. I also have the Compendium running for quick reference of course, and occasionally I open one of my many PDF's.

Notepad: one session to keep open my notes on people/places/etc; another session to make rough notes on what/where the PCs went for the session

Calculator or spreadsheet: for when my brain isn't working

everything else i do with paper...

i'm a minamialist when it comes to laptops and gaming. the only reason i even use a laptop is to keep track/reference of my people/place notes (my brain is broken and doesn't remember these things without aid :) )

Alrighty. So I barely feel qualified to post this, having used it for exactly one session, but I think that Masterplan may change the entire way I run 4e forever...

<snip>

Seriously, I'm not going back. I urge every 4e DM to give it a shot.

Obryn, Masterplan is AWESOME. Thanks for posting about this. I just downloaded it about ten minutes ago and started playing around with it, and it has already got me excited to try a 4E game again. Good stuff.

If DDI was half this good, I would sign up.

I am really really really looking forward to when the new HP Slate comes out... At that point I think I will begin using software AT the table...

Right now I mainly use computers for prep.

I use Obsidian Portal for my campaign wiki, Microsoft Word for creating Adventures, and the DDI sweet of tools for cut/pasting into said adventures...

Once the slate is out though, I'll be looking forward to finding or creating a good combat tracking program.

Strange that no one mentioned Inspiration Pad so far, it's free and having a Random-Table Generator is nearly mandatory for me (creating dozens of NPC's, Plot-Hooks, Treasures, etc. with one click!).

Essential:
OneNote (not free but AWESOME)
Inspiration Pad Pro
a PDF Reader
a good Die Roller

System specific:
Character Generator
Browser-Links to Compendium and Iplay4E Website
Combat Manager
Maptools
