From the trailer and the other promos, I think it'll wind up pretty much as expected. Just so-so.

My understanding is that the reaction you're having is the reason he's there, to play against expectations. He turns out to be a Megele-esque doctor, so his function is likely to provide insight on the aliens, not tote a minigun.

I'm not sure why folks woould complain about the plot here, as if the plot of the original was all that ambitious. The ogirnal had a lot of unfulfilled promise, boasting an ensemble cast that is ultimately just there to get wiped out so that the film's star could take the Predator on alone. Here, I actually do think we'll see a more ensemble effort.

The big hurdle for this movie is that the Predatos have been completely demystified. We get that even though the Predators only attack armed prey, earth weapons are mostly ineffective against their armor. So, seeing some guy unsheathing his katana doesn't have much cache. There'll a couple of ineffectual clangs quickly followed by an excruciating death scream. We need a few new tricks here.

The big thing I didn't like in the trailer is the scene where all the laser dots appear on Brody. As far as I could tell, none of them overlap each other, which instantly kills the illusion for me. Is CGI really that much easier than actually pointing a bunch of laser dots at someone?

Admittedly, the original Predator didn't have much in the way of plot or character development, but you had legitimately imposing actors who absolutely looked the role.

I'm not sure I catch your drift. The first movie had a bunch of musclebound guys. Is that what it takes to look the part?

I think part of the reason the trailer disappoints me is that my expectations were unreasonably inflated. And I blame Rodriguez for that, saying how he titled the movie Predators to draw a parallel to Aliens. That trailer most definitely does not promise a similar caliber of awesome. At best, it looks closer in quality to Alien Resurrection. And that's not a good thing.

That's an unfair comparison. Of course it won't be Aliens that's one of the better movies ever made! I expect it better then Resurrection, and that's the 45 minute version that was actually pretty good (ignoring everything with the Alien human hybrid). The movie could easily be as good as Predator one or two and better the Alien 3 and 4 and better then both AvPs.

Saw it at a preview. All I can say is... highly mediocre. Probably about the same standard as the first AvP. The action scenes are quite blah.

There is no overlapping laser dots on Brody scene in the film. One laser dot? Yeap.

The predators are some breed more 'highly evolved' than the previous ones. Someone makes the comparison between wolf and dogs, but I'm not sure if the newer Predator is the wolf or the dog. There's three of them and they get taken out fairly easily.

The Yakuza has a showdown with one of the Predators. It didn't seem to be wearing armor for some reason. To play fair?

Too bad the thread-forking option is gone. I'm tempted to start a new thread called "Has Robert Rodrigez made any movies that were really all that good?" I really want to like them, what with him being this rebel independent filmmaker and all, but for the most part it just hasn't happened.

I liked Four Rooms but in looking at the movies he's done that I've seen that is the only one that I thought was really good.

Film is directed by Nimrod Antal (who made the really good Kontroll) and not Rodriguez by the way.
