D&D 4E Am I the only one re-booting my 4E experience with Essentials?

I ran the last session of my 4E campaign two weeks ago. As soon as I have the new D&D FRPG "Red Box" in my grubby mits, I'm starting a new Essentials only campaign.

The Essentials looks good so far, but I'll reserve final judgement until after the full product is seen. I like where some of this is going, and am not so hung up on keeping the older material "like it's always been." But, then again, I was among the minority of people who were looking forward to 4e in the early days, so I must be an RPG optimist or something. *shudder*

I don't think a reboot is in order, but I allow players to retool their characters whenever a new source book comes out. This shouldn't be any different: If the party war wizard wants to beome an evoker specialist mage instead, no problem. Heroes are dynamic characters and it's easy to roleplay the change.

Except, the PHB2 is a supplement.

Essentials is a stand-alone product (albeit used with the existing rules set, so it's not like learning a new game).

That's a big difference. There's significant design change in the Essentials line. One that I am liking a whole lot.

It's like re-booting using Pathfinder vs. 3.5 or 3.5 vs. 3E. Sure, the core system is different, but there's some significant differences.

We may well reboot into WotBS with this, but (although I am interested in the new design) the grind will still be there for us I guess.

Going hardcore essentials is an interesting option, but I think I would prefer to keep more options open in my games.

I'd only consider it, if the Essentials line was translated into German. As things are right now, D&D is a hard sell in Germany.

I find it hard to believe that the German market is so small that it wouldn't be profitable to make the translations, especially since the Essentials products are intended to stay in print forever.

Did I mention that Pathfinder is readily available in German?

It's entirely possible that I might be going with an "Essentials-only" campaign in the future.

I think the whole idea is that will be the norm in a few years.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. (well, unless it turns out there is).

essentials in german would be great as it is a limited products edition and boxed sets are more or less the norm here...

as much as i like english books, i have the feeling it is easier to get new players into the game with german rulebooks. And since that is all what essentlials is about, it would be a great move!

I suspect that they haven't found a new publisher yet, which isn't too surprising to me given WotC's treatment of the former D&D publisher in Germany.

But yeah, Essentials in German would be great.
