First review of the new Red Box

However, it is clear to me the box is not meant for anyone at ENworld except perhaps somebody wanting to buy it as a gift hoping to create new gamers.
Hey! What about us obsessive collectors? I demand recognition that this product is also aimed at us! :D :D

Can we please fork the stat inflation discussion to another thread? That´s nothing which comes out of the new box, but from 4e in general.
I'll have one of that too.

For the sake of the speakers-impaired computers, did they mention anything about the characters builds? I suppose they follow Essentials, but does it seem like there are a lot of options on chargen? Do we have both Slayer and Knight fighter builds?

No, it was not a review as such, it seemed more like they received the box that morning and recorded themselves opening and giving their literal first impressions.
I suspect that a more thorough review may come later.

Which is why it is coming out with two different covers, the limited first printing with the oldschool image followed by a new image for subsequent print runs

I'm less interested in the contents of this starter set (which seem fine, btw), than whether WotC will be able to get it on shelves at Walmart, Target, ToysRUs, Sears, etc, where people can see it.

For the record, I got my first starter set (Moldvay Basic) at JC Penny's. :)

I disagree...otherwise why did they use that cover design? I'm probably going to pick up a copy just because it tickles my nostalgia gland so very much. Red box BECMI was my intro to D&D. I get a special little feeling inside when I see that box.

All I have to say is: Paizo, you're move.*

*In the competition between WotC & Paizo, the real winners are us!

If they make this set available at JC Penny's, I will be very, very impressed. :)

If I understand correctly, this particular set (with the 80's logo, etc) will be a limited edition for the collectors and the nostalgia factor

The second printing of this box, which will have a more modern design, will be marketed to new players.

As such, I would expect WotC/Hasbro to put it in Department Stores, Toy Stores, etc...

Heck, if it were me at WotC, I would pay for product placement in The Big Bang Theory or a kid-oriented movie (Remember E.T.?)

Regardless of our positions in the Edition Wars, we all have to recognize that this is a good thing for the hobby

edit: BECAUSE WE NEED NEW PLAYERS!! Right??
