Essentials - calling a spade a spade

If they had:

  • called all the new builds PHB4
  • put all the updated rules in DMG3
  • and just issued a new MM4

Would anybody really give a crap? Really?
Though it is kinda telling from a business and marketing point of view, that they are apparently abandoning the old product lines of new PHBs, DMGs, MMs and 'classic' power books. It's a restart, a new beginning of the product 'D&D' - not just a new ramp onto the highway - it's more, it's the Batman Begins to the Batman franchise.

I couldn't care less about actual negative implications on the actual game, and holy dear I don't think the sky is falling over such a trivial thing like a new direction for a hobby product - but that business and marketing background stuff is always interesting to me. :)

So calling essentials 4.5 is like crying:

- WotC you lied to me, because you said there will never be rules updates and I will now have to buy new things... which they actually never promised...

After a certain age or so, I just accepted the fact that corporations (or any large organization) are not expected to tell the full truth about anything, and will resort to tactics such as: lying, obfuscation, deception, etc ... As long as they can get away with something legally, it will be done.

Basically the marketing and PR people are paid to say things they do not necessarily believe in.
