Gasp I think I am a grognard now

Hehe, I know that uncertainty. Personally, I think I'm grog-curious ;-) I might be an entirely other deviance, I'm not sure - it's meaning is heavily influenced by who spouts the word - ranging from "unable to move on" to "playing the proper edition" through various shades of "I prefer this one". If you're one of the "shady" ones, it's all good and healthy. If it's either of first two - shed the self righteousness and join the light side.

I didn't advance on to 4e or Pathfinder and neither did the groups I play in. Anybody else experience that?

Sort of. For games I run, I haven't moved on from D&D 3.5e, Star Wars Saga Edition, and Warhammer 2nd Edition. 4e isn't for me, and while I consider Pathfinder an improvement on balance, it isn't "better enough" to compel me to switch (and also, it's even more complex than 3.5e, which I already consider too complex).

(My ultimate goal is to try to extract the "kernel" of the 3e system and build a kind of 3.5e-lite from that, incorporating lots of elements from SWSE and 4e and some of my own stuff, and then move on to that in place of 3.5e. However, I have no idea when (or even if) that might occur.)

However, some of the other members of my group do run 4e, and so I play that a lot of the time. My preference would be to play other games, but my personal rule is "I'll play anything you're willing to run".

My group doesn't consider itself fixed to a single game. We may play a game, but it isn't like we're married to it, or even be in an exclusive relationship.

Call us "polygamerous", if you like. We pick the game that'll give us the stuff we want at the time, so we may choose to play 4e at some point, but we didn't (and won't ever) "advance" to it. Same goes for 3e.

I've abandoned self-labelling myself a grognard. Yes, there are things I grumble about. More importantly, I know why I do and don't like certain games or certain aspects thereof. At the same time, I have no problem with someone liking a game that holds no interest to me.

At worst, if asked to participate in a game I have no interest in, I think I'd give a polite refusal along the lines of "thank you for the invitation, have fun." It might include some more explanation like "x doesn't appeal to me".

Neo-Grog, maybe. Are you primarily a wargamer? If you are first and foremost (or even only) an RPGer, you have little grogness to you at all. Carry your RPG books around with you at a local HMGS convention and ask people if they think you are a grognard. They'll help you through this phase.

And, definitely, as was pointed out above, don't confuse the revenue-generating, edition-treadmill as equivalent with advancement. If you don't feel the introduction of particular rules improve your own gaming, then they aren't really an advance.

It sounds to me like your group has found its gaming sweet spot. Rejoice. :)
