Hulu and SGU

I've been watching Stargate Universe on Hulu because I don't get SyFy. Last season they released many of the episodes a week after they were aired, so I was used to seeing threads pop up here on EN World before I saw the episode, but I noticed that two of these threads had popped up and fallen away before I got whiff that a new episode was available. I went back to check Hulu, and... what the...! "The first 3 episodes of the new season will be available the day after their original airdates. Subsequent episodes will become available 30 days after their original airdates."

Thirty days?? I have to wait a MONTH to see the latest SGU? :-S

It was mentioned in a previous SGU thread that you can still see them 8 days after air on Syfy's website.

Yes, Hand of Evil mentioned that in last week's thread in repsonse to my complain about Hulu. However, they haven't updated to the next episode yet, and it's possible they may be going to go for a full month delay as well.

I read a recent news article that said broadcasters are putting in lengthy delays because of advertising concerns or some such, so this might start spreading to other shows. I say it's short-sighted and self-defeating because people are likely to just watch it on a pirate site. Honestly, I'm of the opinion right now that TV is dying, it's on life support in a comatose state, and someone should pull the plug.

Advertising is a funny thing. Right now, nothing anyone does to watch the show after three days really matters.

Advertising rates are based off a metric called C+3; basically, the number of people who watched commercials within three days of air. If you look at a comparison of Live+SD (live and same day viewing of shows) versus C+3, the thing that stands out is that the C+3 numbers are lower. What does this suggest? That people aren't watching commercials when they watch it after the fact.

What does this have to do with online viewing? Networks have taken to announcing Live+7 numbers in press releases, but the metric really doesn't matter. There's no point in them delaying a show 30 days, or even 8, because the only thing that really matters is that C+3 rating.

So I agree; I don't think networks have put enough thought or stock into the online viewing. It took Hulu being wildly successful for them to even notice, and now they're all (IMO, stupidly) pulling back from it. There's definitely changes coming in the television landscape, but like all big things are slow to actually change.

So really, there's no real benefit to them delaying things more than 3 days, and thus it's not really going to hurt cable subscribers. It's just the networks being stupid and shafting the viewers...again. This is why I get most of my entertainment from a Playstation these days.

And I can think of a few other big things that were slow to change like the networks: Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, Brontosaurus*, Stegosaurus....

*Yes, I know it's supposed to be Apatosaurus. Shaddup. :p

From Day After to Week After to 30 Days After...

I'm still waiting to get the final two episodes of season 1 of Haven (the new SyFy series based on Stephen King's story The Colorado Kid). One should be up tomorrow (10/31) since it aired 10/1.

We shall see...

Personally, I get a lot more out of Hulu from the older movies and TV series they feature.
