Why Play D&D?

Why play D&D when World of Warcraft exists? I mean, it's there -- it's RIGHT THERE. And all your friends are playing it. Why not give up the weekly D&D sessions? They're cutting into your raiding time!

It's like snail mail vs. e-mail. Why do some people refuse to change with the times?

MMOs are very confined, restrained. Its a closed environment wish a very structured play experience. That isn't to everyone's tastes and not only that its very much structured around you paying them as much money as possible.

One shouldn't be entirely negative on video games though. WOW may not be able to give you the hand crafted, personal, infinitely varied experience D&D can give but it does provide a much more visceral and instant thrill.

Its a matter of taste, of course. Me, I'd rather play hop scotch than a darn MMO!

Because I can do both? In fact, I raid Sunday and Monday nights, I have a break tuesday, I do a session wednesday, thursday, and a floating friday or saturday session. yes my week is full but i've got no kids, a GF who loves to game with me, and I can't stand most TV.

Because I can't control the game and make it do what I want? Because I can't do fun stuff in an MMO for the heal of it, like steal someone's pants?

Because I'd rather spend time with my friends while pretending to be an elf?

Heck I don't have a console game system, I never have. I've never played a game other than Hearts or Solitaire on a computer. Games are meant to be played around a table where you can view your fellow participants. Games like chess, monopoly, or roleplaying (D&D) are like this.

World of Warcraft? I don't even know what that is, or what it even looks like - nor do I care. Do you play it live? No? Then its something that should not be done. Things you do by yourself, will only cause hair to grow on your palms...

Play D&D, its right there!

Because I can do both. I enjoy each for their own merits, and I'm fortunate enough to be able to dedicate some time to each.

Seriously? From your perspective, this is valid reasoning?

Why play D&D when World of Warcraft exists?

Because I don't want to? Computer games can only offer so much enjoyment to me before they feel repetitive or constrained by the game's preprogrammed story. *IF* I played Wow, I'd probably play it obsessively for a couple months and then just get bored.

I mean, it's there -- it's RIGHT THERE.

No, it's not right there for me.
a)my computer would barely handle it (if not crash entirely if I walked through a heavy graphic/populated area)
b)I don't have a subscription and therefore would have a bunch of extra steps if i ever did want to start playing it

And all your friends are playing it.

All my friends do not. In fact, I can only think of maybe one friend that does... and even she is only on it once a week or so.

Why not give up the weekly D&D sessions?

D&D offers me longer lasting satisfaction than WOW would. I might give up a weekly D&D session for other things, but WOW is not one of those things.

It's like snail mail vs. e-mail. Why do some people refuse to change with the times?

D&D vs. WOW (just like snail mail vs. email) serve two different (albeit similar) purposes. The needs fulfilled by one cannot necessarily be filled by the other, depending on the individual's particular wants.

I used to play it a few years ago. Yes, it's very well put together, easy to pick up, and very convenient to play (a big plus, that last one is!). However, it's simply too restrictive for my taste, being somewhat too limited in actions, as well as setting. And I never really get into the community of players, for some reason, even when gaming with friends I knew IRL. Just not the same.

Also, I'm not a fan of subscriptions.
