D&D voted no.3 favourite toy/game!

According to a Channel 4 programme that was broadcast last night that ranked the 100 favourite toys (and games) ever, D&D is number 3!

You can see the programme online for the next 29 days at: 100 Greatest Toys with Jonathan Ross - 4oD - Channel 4 . You may need a proxy server if you're outside the UK. The D&D segment starts about 10 minutes from the end of the programme.

The programme portrayed gamers as geeks and said it believed the online poll on which the 100 were ranked was skewed. But number 3 is still a good result. Incidentally, the programme's host, Jonathan Ross, is a gamer himself (or was).

If you're wondering, Monopoly was no. 2 and LEGO no.1.

Apologies if this has been posted about already but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere else.

Lego #1 I'm fine with, but Monopoly #2? Blech.

Not only is it a bad game, it's bad for games. How many people won't touch boardgames because of memories of interminable episodes of Monopoly fueled by poorly-thought out and utterly-pervasive house rules?

I play a lot of Monopoly with my kids (ages 5 and 7).
We play by-the-book, no house rules (like the free parking stuff).
Games last about 45 minutes up to an hour.

The real rules include auctioning property if it isn't purchased when landed on, selling houses and hotels back to the bank at 50% resale value, and paying an extra 10% to get property out of mortgage.

If you add free parking, expect games to go at least 2 hours to possibly never ending.

The sample size is too small to be anything "accurate", so this is just a fun poll. For how big the industry is I think you would want at least 10,000 people to respond to get good accuracy. You could work with 1,000 and probably be close. +/- 10%, maybe. For this I would prefer +/- 5% or better.

It's Ross' wife that's the major geek gamer with a topped-out WoW account and a big time imagination - scripted Kickass amongst others. Not sure Ross gets a seat at the table, but she's seat next to the GM geek royalty.

What was the sample size? I watched it, but I don't recall them saying.

I'm surprised D&D is that high.

The poll's criteria needs to be reviewed. I wonder if they included console video games as a specific item, broke it out by type (i.e. Xbox, Wii, PS3), or included it all?

I would have thought a Barbie Doll would be #1 or #2.

I love Monopoly. That plus Risk (especially the house ruled variety) were good substitutes for my roleplaying itch back in high school when I couldn't find a group.

Edit: Barbie wouldn't be on the list (or at least very high) because of the skewed geek + male nature of the internet. IMO...at least.
