D&D is actually kind of unique

Just because D&D is the standard doesn't mean people design games just to be unlike D&D.
Many have done exactly that, in fact. Some have even said as much, in the books themselves, or gone on record elsewhere. Whether unsubtly implied, or stated outright. Regardless.

I'm not sure I want to go mentioning names, because I have this horrible suspicion some random forum member (freshly minted or otherwise) will attempt to tear my face off, should I do so. :uhoh:

Perhaps... Google could lend a hand? :p

Sure, John Wick is one name that comes to mind.

BUT

You can't misconstrue his occasional trolls & rants. Look at his game design, and not just the commentary. It's solid work.

And even in the Wick commentary, it's not about D&D, the game, but the metagame of D&D, IMO. The way D&D is played is as much about what John Wick says as anything else.

You can have extremely characterful drama in D&D, and when John Wick is talking about a game being the anti-D&D, I think it's about a style of D&D that he isn't "down with" (tactical map-heavy, build-heavy, character-lite).

Read his stuff. That's all I'm saying. If someone has the perception that games like "Houses of the Blooded" are simply about being "the anti-D&D", or written as an anti-D&D tract, then I don't think they've actually read Wick's stuff. Thinking that way would be like someone who is actually anti-D&D.
