Firefly - First Episode: Serenity

I have just re-watched Firefly: Serenity, the First/Eleventh TV episode in Joss Whedon's Firefly series. This is the third time I've seen it, and I must say it is still wonderful.

I recommend it to all of you. Watch this first. This is the first episode that Whedon wrote, but the network didn't think it was zippy enough. So they put "The Train Job" on the air first. That made them think they could air the episodes in a strange order, and it was one of the reasons the series didn't do well enough to keep on the air (plus it was expensive).

It is full of drama, tension, humor, and great sci-fi/Western in Space elements. However, if you think they are speaking a strange language at times you're right. Much of the cursing and exclamations are in Chinese. You don't need to know what they say to understand what's going on.

Highly recommended. After you watch this, you'll want to watch the rest of them in the proper order.

My favourite show that never got a proper series. Too bad. It is nice to see Nathan Fillion still on TV (Castle) doing what he does best - be incredibly charming!

He first played Caleb in Buffy. He's the guy who took Xanders' eye.

Also, in Serenity, if you pay attention there are three actors who also had parts in Buffy as well.

They like to slip very subtle Firefly references into Castle. The first one I noticed (and I wasn't even sure if it was a reference at the time) was one where he shot a bad guy in the knee, Beckett tells him, "Nice shot!" and he says, "I was aiming for his head."

More recently, Beckett and Castle corner some Asian bad guys and Castle surprises Beckett by speaking to them in Chinese. She asks him where he learned it, and he says, "TV show I used to love."

Oh! I completely missed the reference in that scene - you are so right! Funny!

Firefly is one of the few TV series I actually own the DVDs for and actually like to watch again and again.

Firefly was great TV with great characters. It's such a bummer that it never had much of a chance.

I go back and watch the episodes now and again. For some reason (or reasons) I tend to gravitate toward the ones with Saffron...
