Cleric help.

Sorry I keep bumping this, I'm not doing it on purpose.

I seem to remember Deities having a particular weapon they favor. Is that something that could help me in my quest for a cool two-hander?

Weapon Proficience. It says Clerics are limited to simple melee/ranged. Does this mean he couldn't carry a Maul (military melee) around with him? I envisioned a BIG hammer.

This is no problem at all. Just take Weapon Proficiency (Maul) for your first level feat. That lets you add the Maul's proficiency bonus to your attacks that have the "Weapon" keyword (e.g., Righteous Brand).

When it says clerics get simple melee and ranged, that just means those are the free proficiencies that they get. If you're willing to spend a feat you can become proficient in any weapon. This is different from previous editions, where clerics were limited in what they could learn altogether.

Alternatively, you could create a dwarven cleric, and take Dwarven Weapon training.

A maul? Not big enough. That hammer is a puny croquet mallet compared to the mordenkrad, which is like if you took the head off two mauls, and put them onto another maul to make some voltron mega maul that crushes things beneath your will. Then you put them in the hands of Hammer McHammerbeard, who is genetically altered to make hammers better simply by his holding onto them.

You don't need to major in Charisma either to be charismatic. A 14 should suffice for your efforts.

As for builds, the CharOp forum on the WotC site has a lot of builds. Many of those will be "optimized" as opposed to background-centric but you can still get a good idea as to what powers/feats are good, etc. As I said, I think you could make that particular build work fairly well. I'm not real familiar with the clerics Str powers myself, but I think you should be fine.

I don't hang out on the CharOp forums myself, but someone posted a link to all the build guides on the WotC wiki a while ago, so here: Whoops! Browser Settings Incompatible

I like dracosuave's plan. A nice Str/Wis dwarf with just enough Cha to get by.
You mentioned that you only have PHB 1? Did you know that dwarves now get a choice between Wis or Str for your build?
I would suggest putting that into Str
And grab that hammer feat for dwarves.

My son is running a WOTBS campaign right now, and I'm playing a Half-Elf BattleCleric. I know,
BattleClerics are sadly, badly maligned and neglected, but I've been having a lot of fun with it.

I'm going Twin-Strike for the dilettante power, so that at 11th. level, it will be an at-will. I'm using
a Radiant Urgrosh, combining it with Two-Weapon Fighting, Opening, and Defense. I combined
this with Radiant Servant for my Paragon pathway, taking advantage of the 19-20 crit range. Our
party does understand that I'm trying hard to be a striker who just happens to heal. I've encouraged
every one in the party to bring at least one self-heal power besides Second Wind, and so far,
even though its been rough sometimes, we've done okay (some of the WOTBS encounters seem
a bit OP!).

When/if we make it to Epic level, I'm going with Eternal Seeker. I'm going to grab Hurricane of Blades,
multiclass Avenger for Oath of Enmity and 1 round of double attack dice rolls. So from that point on,
you'll have a massive encounter power (4 attacks!), critting on 19-20 rolls, and rolling twice for each
attack. Combine with an Action Point for even more mayhem, plus your Twin-Strike at-wills, and you
should be able to do pretty good spike damage. With Supreme Healer, Gamblers Word (you should
crit somewhere!), Radiant Vessel, and appropriate items to help your healing, you should get 8 uses
of Healing Word per encounter, plus healing doled out by some of your other encounter, daily, and
utility powers.

Just a thought, and another option for you.

Also, here are a couple of links for some more ideas:

I'm running 16 Strength, and 14 Wisdom and 14 Charisma on my BattleCleric. (Half-Elf).
