Was there some warlords article previously slated for release that got cut? When did they 'take warlords away' in the first place?
There was a whole book slated for release, that would have included that information for all the PHB1 classes. When the book cancellation was officially announced, it was strongly implied that the material would eventually be published through DDI.

I am so lucky, i live outside USA, so wizards spies didn´t find me and blackened all references to warlords from my books, pdf´s and washed my memory...

FASA used to do that. I'll never forget the night they kicked in the door on our SR1 game and forcibly upgraded us to SR2...the physad player still suffers nightmares, I hear.

?Melee training factors into it... how?

It made basic attacks from non-Str classes much, much stronger. My avenger had a Str of 11, but using her Wis of 20 made her MBAs granted by the bard or warlord much more useful.

And it's not like Melee Weapon Training is useless at half mod to damage now; in my avenger's case, it'd still be +5 to hit and +2 damage, and if you don't hit, you don't do any damage at all.

That's why I stopped spending any karma to bond my dice foci; their damned mages kept using them to ground their tracking spells. I could never get any peace from them.

Warlords were not present in Essentials, despite being kind of a 'poster child' of 4th edition. Back when 4e was new it was the most divisive and unique and discussed thing in terms of the magic versus non magic question. Being the class that it was it really sort of brought a question of what warlord would look like post-essentials, which is why most people were looking forward to class Compendium.

Whether the warlord in Class Compendium is "Essentialized" or just "new stuff" is still up in the air, though.

The warlord hands out MBA's like candy. Classes like the slayer can take Melee Training so they're only dependent on a single stat to maximize their combat effectiveness; as a result, they can become unbalanced compared to other strikers, especially when optimized. That's why WotC nerfed Melee Training last September, IIRC.

Apart from this balance issue that has been fixed, what part of the warlord doesn't "play right with 4eE"?
