On a related note, what would a good system be if I want to have something more like, say, limber UC Gundam mobile suits rather than than battle tech lumbering mechs?

The original battletech was fantastic, but it wasn't an RPG though. Easy enough to get the original rules and then all you really need is a hex shaped battle-mat and either counters or minis.

They released an RPG called Mechwarrior (not to be confused with wizkids mini-click game) but I never played it.

Is Heavy Gear a wargame or an RPG (or both?)

Tough question.

As I recall, Mekton (RPG) had more mobile mechs. And Battletech/Mechwarrior has a range of mecha ranging from small and agile to huge & lumbering.

The most agile mecha in an RPG that I can think of would be in Robotech or RIFTS- same system, different games- and I wouldn't recommend either one. They're cool as sourcebooks, but the game mechanics are wonky and a bit wahoo...and forget about balance.

You might find what you like in a superhero game, scaling up the "Iron Man" types to the size you want.

Dream Pod 9 has been focusing on their Miniature Game line for the last few years, however, they have plans to produce a new RPG HG v4 by the end of 2012.
In the mean time, current and future products in PDF/ book format will support both the mini line rules, and 2nd edition RPG rules for character and Gear/equipment stats.

Jovian Chronicles is another RPG/Mini game line, more in line with Gundam sized mechs, alongside smaller personal mechs. The JC 1st edition rule set is based on 2nd Edition HG rules, and carries many more rules for space, including combat between ships, and mechs in space, alongside radiation rules and other dangers.

It's been out of print via regular store for awhile, but check their online store, or other online pdf stores for their books.
I think you can get printed copies of either HG or Jovian through their online store if you like the hard copies.

Good observation: another thing about Battletech is that it has it's own RPG already linked to it- Mechwarrior.

It actually hasn't been called Mechwarrior for five years. The new edition of the BattleTech RPG came out earlier this year: A Time of War: The BattleTech RPG. Why the name change? Well, because you can play characters other than Mechwarriors! Spies, technicians, nobles, mechwarriors, journalists... there's a lot of room for roleplaying in the BattleTech universe.

I'm very fond of BattleTech, especially in its current incarnation. I really like the universe, and the current range of products are really good. The new introductory set for the boardgame is really good value (the maps are amazing).

The RPG itself is fairly nice; it has some fiddly modifiers but mostly runs easily. The most incredible thing about BT is how it all integrates and scales: A Time of War is the RPG/Personal level, Total Warfare gives the BattleMech rules, with Tactical Warfare going more into interesting battlefields; then Strategic Operations looks at larger engagements (battalions!) with rules for running them a lot quicker (and which can be adapted for regular battletech as well). I'm really waiting for Interstellar Operations, which allows you to control entire factions. :)

Cheers!
