I can't tell if the OP is looking for more of a wargame or an RPG, but I'll throw out my suggestion of Mechaton. You'd need the rules and some legos...

I don't know if its in print, but there is a HG RPG.The original battletech was fantastic, but it wasn't an RPG though. Easy enough to get the original rules and then all you really need is a hex shaped battle-mat and either counters or minis.
They released an RPG called Mechwarrior (not to be confused with wizkids mini-click game) but I never played it.
Is Heavy Gear a wargame or an RPG (or both?)
Tough question. On a related note, what would a good system be if I want to have something more like, say, limber UC Gundam mobile suits rather than than battle tech lumbering mechs?
There is indeed a HG RPG, which went through three editions. However, the agreement with SJ Games has expired and the RPG has gone back to Dream Pod 9. I'm unsure about current publishing plans, but there's some stuff available (including everything that came out for 3e, AFAIK) at DP9 Online Store.I don't know if its in print, but there is a HG RPG.
Heavy Gear
Jovian Chronicles (also by DP9) is very much inspired by Gundam. On a related note, what would a good system be if I want to have something more like, say, limber UC Gundam mobile suits rather than than battle tech lumbering mechs?
Good observation: another thing about Battletech is that it has it's own RPG already linked to it- Mechwarrior.
