Whatever lives on the opposite side of mirrors. Weird, mercurial shapeshifters who covet our concrete reality. And if they can look like anyone who looks in a reflective surface... How long have they already been invading?

I know it was mentioned, but I like the fey idea, thoren in with Harry dresden's summer/winter courts.

There could be a battle that his suddenly erupted for some insult or another between the courts. Rather then dirty their own soil, they take their fight to our world.

either that or a Smurfs vs tribbls war and we are in the middle of the conflict.

Fey, Angels, dream-creatures, time travellers, internal threat; something abstract like disease, or perhaps an ideological shift (a ZEITGEIST, if you will...)

I'm definitely interested in Zeitgeist...

However, for the OP, I would go with humans. Maybe put some twist on it - from the future with very advanced weaponry and/or something that temporarily can nullify/lessen superpowers.

In cases like this, I always think, "what are the players least likely to expect?"

I'd want to use monsters that seem simple and underpowered but which scale nicely. Goblins are a great example. They move up to redcaps/spriggans, and formorian giants, and still can be sneaky backstabbing terrors.
