*WARNING* I haven't read all the posts yet, so if I end up looking completely ignorant of what's already been said, it's because I really am. :)

I like playing Wizards, but over all I appreciate versatility, and that has Ranger written all over it.

Hit Points average only 1 less than the Fighter, and he's a match for the Fighter in BAB. He gets bonus class abilities that run a close parallel to the bonus Feats the Fighter gets, he gets a mountain of skills, two good Saves, and gets some magic to boot.

He's limited in what kinds of armor he can wear, but I've seldom seen a campaign where many Fighter types really went for the heavy stuff. Too many penalties, and at higher levels it's far too easy to Magic your AC up to acceptable levels. (In most of our games, the Wizard ended up having the best AC in the party.)

heavy armor does suck... big time. we have a cleric in full plate in my current party....

Just the noise he makes (move silently -6 (!!!)...)... unbearable!!!!

Most often than not, it causes problem to whatever plans we're having...
He has promised to remove it as soon as he finds something better though...

I've actually never played a Paladin or a Monk. All the other I think I have at least multi classed in.

I disagree with the heavy armor dislike. Mithril fullplate + heavy shield has been the survival kit of half my melee characters.

Ok.. i can see how its useful in combat.
Still it's not the ultimate "adventuring" kit... i have i hard time picturing a guy in full plate being an adventurer, wearing it 24/7...

I've no idea how you play it, but IMO a guy in full plate, shouldn't be actually wearing it more than half the encounters he faces... especially in a "horce-less" party...

just imagine the party hustling in the woods, when suddenly some baddies creep out of the foliage. Ok the full plate will serve the party's fighter in the combat to come...question is... how the hell was he hustling (or even walking!) through the woods in full plate in the first place??

Mithril is lighter ok...still...the image in my mind is closer to "parody" than something ..."epic"...or whatever...

Endurance and you wear a mithril one 24/7. Without any nightly attacks are problematic.

Slowly and noisily. Horses and spells are for when speed matters.

Heavy Armor Getting you down? Loud Clanging Interrupting your Sneaking? Your Shiny Body Distracting and Disturbing the Local Populace?

Arms and Equipment Guide p.16- Quick Escape. For 300gp, remove armor as a standard action.

Magic Item Compendium p.9- Called. For 2000gp, summon your armor onto around your body from anywhere on the same plane as you as a standard action.

At lover levels, or in a campaign where the items that could mitigate the problem aren't present or readily available, I always just bought a chain shirt and slept in that. "Fighter jammies" is what I call them.

I did this too in some towns where they would look at me funny if I walked through in full plate, or in a town where weapons were peace-bonded/prohibited.
