DDI Character Builder Home Brew Equipment

Eyes of Nine

Everything's Fine
In the non-cloud based DDI Character Builder, you could add home-brew items. They didn't mesh 100%, but at least they would print up on the character sheet (and if anyone has any tips on how to make them mesh better, that would be welcome). But now with this cloud-based DDI Character Builder, I can't find a place to create/add home brew items. My DM is running a Pathfinder campaign, and my cleric has received a mask of alignment discernment or something - very sweet. But I don't know how to put it on my character.

Any advice welcome, we will probably be playing on 4th of July weekend.

Thanks,

chris

AFAIK there is no way at all to add custom info to anything in the new CB.

Which is most of what makes it absolutely 100% useless to my group.

Step 1: Print your character sheet.

Step 2: Find a pen.

Step 3: Write "Mask of Alignment Discernment" on your character sheet.

In all seriousness, there's no custom content integration in the online Character Builder. If you want to type it in, use the "Session and Campaign Notes" field of the Manage Character tab.

Also, why are you using the Character Builder for a Pathfinder game? Or is it 4e-system, Pathfinder-setting?

Jester: Well, that will save me ~$24 every three months then.
Any sort of online tool available otherwise for 4e? I do like how it calculates and prints up all my power cards for me. May have to go back to nonline tool then...

Thanks for replies guys, it's as bad as I feared.

Any place you recommend I kvetch about it where a WoTC rep might listen?

Really, is it that big of a deal to write in your custom magic item? If you do, you can keep using the up-to-date online builder.

Some of them read these forums, but, frankly, no amount of kvetching is going to make custom items appear any faster. The guys working on the online tools are already swamped with work - bug fixes, new features, entire new apps. They know a lot of people want ways to add custom content, but unfortunately that's one of the most difficult things to implement properly (there's a reason it was implemented at such a shallow level in the offline builder). Given enough time, they'll get to it.

For things like armor, neck slot items, weapons, and implements, I would give the character a generic +X item, and then make up my own custom item card and give it to them. That way the math is correct AND they have a card (to with the rest) that has the pertinent information, like critical damage and powers.

Now, if it is an item that has a property that changes some bonus in a persistent way (beyond the standard enhancement bonuses), this method obviously does not work.

Magic items aren't too bad, but what if you have a custom paragon path? Powers? A custom race?

Paragon paths and races are tough, especially since you can't "skip" them in the CB so they can be filled in by hand. Powers aren't really tough. You can just write up your own power card. I've done it before, including power cards for powers granted by custom items.

I mentioned magic items, though, because that's what the OP said he was trying to include.
