DDI Character Builder Home Brew Equipment

The original offline character builder has been adapted to enable custom content pretty well.

Or taking a trip to the vast, gray area of, "Did I just violate my terms of service?"

and even deeper in to the land of "does anybody really care?"

I cant support anyone stealing ip like some have done but for your personal customizations - you really have to wake up with a WOTC lawyer in your bed for this to be something significant.

Really, is it that big of a deal to write in your custom magic item? If you do, you can keep using the up-to-date online builder.

Some of them read these forums, but, frankly, no amount of kvetching is going to make custom items appear any faster. The guys working on the online tools are already swamped with work - bug fixes, new features, entire new apps. They know a lot of people want ways to add custom content, but unfortunately that's one of the most difficult things to implement properly (there's a reason it was implemented at such a shallow level in the offline builder). Given enough time, they'll get to it.

Right, like the Character Visualizer and Game Table. Say, does the online version of the Monster Builder let you build monsters yet?

Given that I can hop on the official VTT and play a game whenever I feel like, you probably shouldn't have used it to try and support your point. The fact that it's in widespread beta at this point only supports my point: WotC will eventually get to it.

Well, no, it's not that big a deal, but since it worked in the off-line version, it would be nice to have same functionality in on-line version. It also feels "hinky". And boy, a far cry from AD&D (yes, I've said it now...) where home brewing was encouraged.

I do get that allowing exceptions to the data is a nightmare for coders. But I also want *my* stuff to work the way *I* want it too :p. (I want one of those geese Daddy, and I want it now!!!)

Thanks,

Chris

For things like armor, neck slot items, weapons, and implements, I would give the character a generic +X item, and then make up my own custom item card and give it to them. That way the math is correct AND they have a card (to with the rest) that has the pertinent information, like critical damage and powers.

Now, if it is an item that has a property that changes some bonus in a persistent way (beyond the standard enhancement bonuses), this method obviously does not work.

Ah, well I will try this workaround for my item. Didn't know I could make custom cards in CB.

Chris

I don't think you can. But if you give the PC a Magic Sword +1 in the CB, then make a +1 Sword of Fire and Ice in something like Power2ool, the CB character sheet will have the right math and you can just give the player the custom card to replace the generic one after they print out their sheet.

The thing is that, if they made customizeable content available, it might considerably lower the amount of time it takes them to update it with new content, since the writers and editors would be able to do this themselves, instead of asking the coders to get it in there.

Nope. The coders would still have to review everything anyway in order to make sure that the math was correct, that everything was "hooked up" properly, etc.

Also, how would this help things? You're giving more work to the writers and editors (who already have full work loads, I assume), and not taking much work away from the software team.
