Is there any weapons a Riding War Dog could use? A means (other than a magic fang spell) to increase the animals damage via weaponry or a magical enhancement to its natural weapons.

The creature is a paladins mount but in no way shape or form should benefits from any class feature other than the SRD paladin be suggested. i.e. Don't tell me to get levels in halfling outrider or somesuch.

This is specifically about equipment that my dog could be outfitted with to increase the damage output of his natural weapons.

Help me Enworld, you're my only hope!

Train the Warbeast Template from Monster Manual II, p. 219. This will take 6 months, but grant it all sorts of bonuses and the ability to wear armor.
Enchant armor any number of ways. There are a series of armor enhancements that reactively deal magical energy damage every time someone hits your mount. You have all the armor enhancements available to humanoids, available to your mount. Note that custom sized armor costs more than standard humanoid versions.
Consult this wizards article Wild Life to see all the body slots for magical items an animal can hold. A Paladin's mount get's an Int bonus, so any creature Int 3 and above can intentionally use magical items. Your options are almost as limitless as a humanoid characters....
EXCEPT... I do not know any way to give animals weapons. nothing comes to mind about manufactured weapons in the mouth/paws/talons of critters. There are plenty of ways to enhance their natural attacks though any number of items, but you can't put a sword in Fido's mouth.

Hmmm, that might work. Apparently bites do piercing, slashing, and bludgeoning... so about anything that works on a monk would work on my riding dogs face.

Incidentally, can your special mount take class levels and use command word items... if it's a dog?
A Paladin's mount cannot take any class levels to my knowledge. All of it's progression comes from the Paladin it is bonded with.

As for command word items, hm... If the creator of the magic item designs the magic item with a specific command word, and it is in a language the dog cannot speak, which would be all of them, than no.

HOWEVER, lets get creative here. If my Factotum PC was approached with this dilemma, since he crafts Wondrous Items, he'd cast a Speak With Animals spell on himself, with the dog present, as he was working on the device. He'd then interview the dog as to what command word the dog would prefer the item to trigger by. He'd have the dog bark it, and incorporate it into the custom design. Than, the magic item that was specifically crafted for this dog, would work for this dog.

Another option would be to have someone cast a Tongues and Permanency spell on your dog so it can speak and understand any language of any intelligent creature. Or enchant an item that granted the same, either permanently or a significant number of times per day and equip it on your dog. This might make your dog more versatile than you!

Amulet of Mighty Fists? Monk's Belt? (Dogs can wear belts, can't they?) Girdle of Giant Strength?

Animal Item Slots
Although it's easy to imagine an animal benefiting from magic equipment beyond a simple saddle and a suit of barding, fitting a mount's physiology to the list of item slots available to characters is not an easy task. Try the following variant list of item slots for quadruped animals (and other monsters when appropriate).

  • One skull cap or helm
  • One pair of lenses or goggles
  • One collar
  • One saddle blanket or vest
  • One saddle or jacket
  • One belt or strap worn in front of or over the haunches
  • One pectoral or harness worn over the chest or shoulders
  • One pair foreleg bracers
  • One pair of foreleg shoes or mitts -- hoofed creatures wear shoes and creatures with paws wear mitts
  • Two rings -- creatures with toes wear rings on the toes and creatures with hooves wear "rings" just above fore hooves
  • One pair of hind leg shoes or mitts -- hoofed creatures wear shoes and creatures with paws wear mitts
So, if the Amulet is worn in the collar slot, girdle might fit the pectoral/harness slot, and it can wear a belt, so Yes!

Normally the "girdle" is worn in the belt slot on a humanoid. I'd probably limit the beast to one of the two, either Strength or the Monk's Belt.

Mouthpick is a weapon quality that can be added to any
melee weapon. The weapon must be of a size the <wielder> would normally use, or it takes a penalty for using an awkwardly sized weapon. Only creatures with a natural bite attack can wield a mouthpick weapon. A mouthpick weapon looks similar to a normal weapon, but when a qualifying creature places the handle of the weapon in its mouth, the handle writhes and transforms into a shape that can be wielded easily in the creature’s jaws.

The creature’s natural bite attack is now replaced by the weapon attack; if the creature has a sufficiently high base attack, it can even gain additional attacks with the mouthpick weapon. While wielded in a creature’s mouth, the weapon automatically grants the creature profi ciency in its use.

Recently, mouthpick weapons have begun to gain favor among other creatures that lack hands but have a natural bite attack. They are particularly useful to druids who wish to continue wielding their favorite weapon while in a wild shape form.
