Spelljammer Converting Spelljammer creatures

Last thing, I guess:

The stargazer uses its carapace as a blind, imitating an outcropping of precious stone. Wandering animals or greedy adventurers entranced with their find receive a “shocking” surprise.

Camouflage ability?

DC 20 or do you want to go higher on this one?

I was thinking DC 25, but 20 would do as well. Unfortunately it gives no information as to how good its camouflage ability is beyond an "often mistaken".

Well, in 3E alignment terms "Often" is the least reliable grade, beneath "Usually" and "Always", so I'm happy with the lower DC 20 Camouflage.

Sounds good, though we can bump to DC 25 if Shade prefers. Maybe allow the stonecunning on the Spot check?

Camouflage (Ex): Since a stargazer looks like a mound of stone when at rest, it takes a DC 20 Spot check to notice it before it attacks. Anyone with ranks in Knowledge (arcanna) can use that skill instead of Spot to notice the plant. Dwarves can use stonecunning to notice the subterranean version.

"Knowledge (arcanna)"?

"Spot to notice the plant."

"stonecunning to notice the subterranean version?"

Shirley sum misteak? :p

Apart from the typos and the subterranean asteroid-dweller, why would arcana help spot a lump of rock is fake? Wouldn't geography make more sense, since that covers "lands, terrain"?

Something like this...

Camouflage (Ex): Since a stargazer looks like a bluff of rock when at rest, it takes a DC 20 Spot check to notice it before it attacks. Anyone with ranks in Knowledge (geography) can use that skill instead of Spot to notice the beast. Dwarves can use stonecunning bonus on rolls to notice a stargazer.

Heh, lots of typos and pasting errors. :p

But Knowledge (arcana) is the appropriate skill for magical beasts, which is why I included it. How about arcana or geography?

So "Anyone with ranks in Knowledge (geography) or Knowledge (arcana) can use one of those skills instead of Spot to notice the beast. Dwarves can use stonecunning bonus on rolls to notice a stargazer."?

That'd be OK.

I suppose the arcana check represents something like "In the library of mine wizardly mentor I have read accounts in Ye Booke of Starbeastes of a monstryre most foule that dwelleth upon asteroids which doth most cunnyngle masquerade as an butte of gem-veined stone. I fear yonder boulder might be such a beast."

Precisely!

Oops, I meant to say Dwarves can use their stonecunning bonus...
