3.0 Era Polyhedron

Omega World d20 remains one of my favorite games ever. It was brilliant in its simplicity. I would love to see it reprinted standalone or compiled into an OGL release.

I liked very little of the Poly content. When we got a d20 Scoobie Doo (whatever it was called) instead of the complete content of the featured D&D adventure... and then they charged extra in order to download that content? I unsubbed.

Too bad, because Dungeon turned around soon after.

And when I got a Freeport adventure instead of another d20 article in my Polyhedron, I sent an e-mail of complaint. And when Castle Maure took up an entire issue, I almost didn't buy it. This is a thread in praise of the brilliant game design of Polyhedron not one to attack it. And I used HiJinx with my bards for a bit in a campaign. When Poly disappeared the magazines got smaller so you would probably had to pay for the content anyway.

It wasn't the mini-games in Polyhedron that wowed me, but rather the articles that it included.

I can't tell you what issue, or who wrote it, but there was a great short article on having "alertness levels" in the dungeon that made the denizens become more proactive as a general alarm was raised (by invading adventurers). It was pure gold, and still holds up today as a great piece for anyone who wants to run a dynamic dungeon.

I really need to go dig that out sometime soon.

I'm pretty sure it was written by none other than Mike Mearls, but I'll be darned if I can remember the issue number off hand (I do believe a variant of it showed up in one of the adventures he did for Fiery Dragon Press).

Cheers,
Colin

Any chance we'll ever see the rest of Downer compiled? (I'm guessing that WotC doesn't have the rights to Downer or Zogonia, based on the earlier compilations.)

I keep asking Kyle, but we never quite get to the part of the conversation where he agrees to make it happen.

You're looking for Dungeon #95, the Polyhedron with Mecha-Crusade. The system is by Mike Mearls, and it's called "Alert Factor." It originally appeared in the Fiery Dragon adventure "To Stand on Hallowed Ground."

I thought it was nifty.

Okay, I finally looked through my old collection. It was in Polyhedron #154/Dungeon #95, the November/December 2002 issue (the Dungeon issue of which had the Book of Vile Darkness adventure "The Porphyry House Horror") which had the article.

You were spot on in that the article, "Improved Initiative: Alert Factor," was indeed written by Mike Mearls, after having been used in Fiery Dragon Press's adventures To Stand on Hallowed Ground and The Giant's Skull.

It's a great piece, and I have to admit that remembering that Mike wrote that makes me feel more (even more) hopeful towards 5E!
