The fairies are not keeping it in plain sight, so unless you can discover the location of the chest, no, you can't make a run for it.

When the faries attacked, which way did they come from?
also, every one should check for loose stones and secret doors in the keep. I have an idea.

When the fairies attacked, they came from all directions: one from the north, and vertically high above you, the others roughly from the trees to the side of the path.
Searching the tower proves very fruitful: Jamilee, Tibard, and Karl all notice that the dust covering the floor is unevenly distributed, and the party quickly discovers a trapdoor in the bottom floor of the tower.
Clearing away the dust, the trapdoor is unlocked, and opens into a narrow, short tunnel leading east, into darkness.

"Permhapss an eesskape route?" suggests Jamalee, her gravelly voice ever present.
Karl and Jamalee both search their belongings for a light source.

No, short means the tunnel is not tall, ie. one would have to crouch (or be short) to move through it.

How far down to the floor of the tunnel?
ps: sorry for slow response. My brother was here for the weekend.
Intentions: jump down if the distance is safe. then light the sticks and hope that the passage is not too long.
