April submissions to the online Dragon & Dungeon

Quickleaf

Legend
April is around the corner and that means the submission window for the online magazines opens up.

Anyone want to share what they've been working on? :)

Me, I'm just focusing on a Court of Stars article on the Wild Hunt - translating the myths to D&D has been challenging by also very rewarding as I got to crack open my old Deities & Demigods.
One thing I noticed is that they have a ton of drow/underdark material slated for release later this year. I wonder if there's an opportunity for some writers to focus on those themes as a sort of tie-in?

I have a few ideas. One not likely to get picked since 4E will be gone by the time its published. It involved introducing a new Demonomic/Lords of Chaos/Court of Stars-esq Big Bad showcase feature. But I will pitch it anyway. Also, a Domain of Dread based off of The Great God Pan.

Another involved a new weaponmaster fighter build. A specific concept that has gotten no real support in any form.

Another involved a potential Unearth Arcana. If they even still do those. And a related article detailing a new item subsystem that may get covered in the Dungeon Delver's Handbook, trap making!

I just had a collaborative piece approved. Yep, you heard me right, I did something for 4e. And it was fun. Now the waiting till it comes out. :)

Shem, having been part of a collaborative cross-edition venture through Open Design, I'm curious, were you the idea man here and someone else handled the crunch? That was about the only way I could adequately design in PF. And, really not trolling or anything asking this, have you played 4e or DMed very many times?

I didn't handle the crunch, just ideas for what went into it.

As for 4e in general, never DMed it, and really only a superficial knowledge of the mechanics - not enough to write crunch on my own. I have precious little time for freelancing as it is, and Pathfinder projects keep me busy, so I wouldn't be able to really devote the time to learning another system enough to write rules content for it at this point - plus my group is playing various iterations of 3e/3.5/3.P at the moment so I couldn't use them for playtesting if I did.

Collaborative work though, with someone handling the rules nitty gritty, that's something I can do if the flavor concept involved is something I like.

Remember that Perkins article last month: they're moving away from Points of Light this year, and focussing future magazine content on Forgotten Realms (and other legacy settings).

I know they have a long lead-in for submissions, but this probably affects queries for this window.

The drinking adventure was originally a submission for Pathfinder's open call, where they only gave you two requirements. The title was "Flight of the Red Raven," and it had to involve an overland chase.

So, upon brainstorming with a friend and recalling that most good beers are named after animals, I came up with a plot where a villain steals the secret recipe for Red Raven beer.

It was also a commentary on intellectual property theft.

(Though now that you mention it, I did neglect to have any "hangover"-inspired scenes. That's obviously why it was rejected.
