So who all among us is participating in the D&D Next playtest? Oh, yeah, there's a Non-Disclosure Agreement, but that doesn't stop you from saying that you're participating, does it? It just stops participants from spilling any of the secret details of the game, right? Lou, legal opinion? I mean, the playtest materials MAY be set up so that a DM can get the stuff and use it to run a game for his group. But, if that was true, then his players wouldn't be bound by any NDA that he agreed to in order to get the download.

And let's just assume that the playtest materials are REALLY, REALLY, SUPER-DUPER COOL, maybe because they might not be some way-out, wacky weirdness, they just MIGHT be a reiteration of a TRUE CLASSIC module! And I MIGHT just really be wanting to dive into this thing, IF I just happened to be participating in the playtest, which I am categorically NOT saying.

D&D Next

I refuse to participate. In fact, I am likely going to refrain from purchasing any new Wizards products.
Likewise.
I recall saying the same thing when 4E came out. *sigh* We all know how that went. It's really not an issue for me because I'm getting my rp fix from the games I'm in now, be they 3.5D&D, Pathfinder, 4E, or even (and especially) my 2 1E AD&D games. Still, it is interesting to note what they're changing for 1st level characters, like .... THE REMAINDER OF THIS MESSAGE HAS BEEN REMOVED AS IT VIOLATES THE WotC D&D Next NDA!

whew! glad I did some self-editing there before I was sanctioned by the Renton, WA Gnomes!

From the FAQ:

Does my whole D&D group need to sign up for playtesting if I want to run the playtest materials for them?

Yes. Anyone playtesting D&D Next needs to go through the official sign up process and agree to the requirements for playtesting and the Online Playtest Agreement.

He**, Kerlan, I never said that WotC didn't WANT that, I just said that you didn't HAVE to do it that way. and players still are NOT bound by the playtest agreement that the DM signed, which is all that I said before.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Next. While there are a few things I like about 4e, I have not been able to embrace it as my game of choice. I'm DM'ing and playing it a bit, but I can say that it will not replace previous games for me the way 3 and 3.5 did. I'm willing to give the Wizards a 'do over'. I have access to the playtest materials, but I have not had a chance to really read them yet.

I've been looking into Savage Worlds a little bit; was trying to find a game that works across genres but isn't quite as complicated as HERO. So far I like what I see - it's fairly straightforward, with an emphasis on making the games easy for the GM to run.

I'm signed up for the playtest, too, so we can DM some short dungeon vingettes for each other! Or maybe roll up two characters each and take turns DMing for them?

If your looking for cross-genre, you probably can't find a better system than GURPS. It's only semi-sucky.
