I recall saying the same thing when 4E came out. *sigh* We all know how that went. It's really not an issue for me because I'm getting my rp fix from the games I'm in now, be they 3.5D&D, Pathfinder, 4E, or even (and especially) my 2 1E AD&D games. Still, it is interesting to note what they're changing for 1st level characters, like .... THE REMAINDER OF THIS MESSAGE HAS BEEN REMOVED AS IT VIOLATES THE WotC D&D Next NDA!Likewise.
I mean, the playtest materials MAY be set up so that a DM can get the stuff and use it to run a game for his group. But, if that was true, then his players wouldn't be bound by any NDA that he agreed to in order to get the download.

I'm signed up for the playtest, too, so we can DM some short dungeon vingettes for each other! Or maybe roll up two characters each and take turns DMing for them?I'm cautiously optimistic about Next. While there are a few things I like about 4e, I have not been able to embrace it as my game of choice. I'm DM'ing and playing it a bit, but I can say that it will not replace previous games for me the way 3 and 3.5 did. I'm willing to give the Wizards a 'do over'. I have access to the playtest materials, but I have not had a chance to really read them yet.
If your looking for cross-genre, you probably can't find a better system than GURPS. It's only semi-sucky.I've been looking into Savage Worlds a little bit; was trying to find a game that works across genres but isn't quite as complicated as HERO. So far I like what I see - it's fairly straightforward, with an emphasis on making the games easy for the GM to run.
