D&D 5E Backstage at D&D Next Keynote...

The FIRST one,.was one too many.

Damn straight.

Seriously, I don't understand the appeal of world shattering events when the rules change. So what? The rules change. It's not like all the assassins need to disappear from the world just because there is no longer an assassin class. All those same characters just continue on as unusually murderous rogues...

The last one was one RSE too many. And I doubt they'll hold to that promise when it comes to promote the next novel trilogy, or promote 6E.

I believe them. I'd lay money on no more RSEs after "The Sundering", at least until the current crew is no longer with WotC and we have a totally new team. So, at least until next Christmas . . . . (Doh! Sorry I went there.)

It's just a keynote, an intro to the con. There are several D&D seminars throughout the weekend, so there will be more news. Can't give away all the juicy bits on day one can we? Got to spread that stuff out a bit!

True, and I suppose I'll be able to enjoy myself with the sorc and lock while I wait for new info.

One more RSE to transition from 4E to 5E . . . but rather than changing the Realms to suit the new rules, the purpose is to "set the Realms right". Also, Mearls said that "The Sundering" would be the *last* RSE. I am intrigued.

Well, the Forgotten Realms was already sundered once when Ao split the world into two for both the Gods and the Primordial. What if it happened again?

It would let them to split the world into several pieces/timelines. Thus allowing what happens in say, Realms A (Book series realms) affecting what happens in Realms B (RPG setting Realms). Or Realms C (Ed's Realms)

It would be a way of hitting the Reset Button without actually retconning anything.

Heh, it's amazing at how completely FR is following in the same mistakes as the Dragonlance setting. The Spellplague was it's 5th Age period, and now we're going to have the same rough fix as well.

Gutsy move, and I like it, to give another TWO years til 5E. 4E revenue must be dropping due to a new edition, tho I could be wrong. However they should take their time get it right - playtest to heck (no core crap maths on release like skill challenges) and lots of time for every one to stick their ideas in.
And I guess re-releasing and/or opening up older editions will help the revenue stream until 5E and hopefully generate some good will.

Though there wasn't a lot of new info, the stuff they did tell us, makes me feel like they have a solid plan and they're serious about executing it properly.

For me, that's a big change from last year where it seemed like WoTC was spinning it's wheels and had no real plan on where to take D&D, or what to do with it.

I didn't fall off the stage. Really, that RIGHT THERE is a personal triumph.

Typing this on my dying phone, so please pardon my brevity. I have high expectations about the nature of the electronic back catalog, but they couldn't give me info til they've signed with their vendor(s) for the products. I'm hoping PDFs and suspect them, but don't know it for sure.

My takeaway? They really don't want to screw up the Realms again. I'm a little doubtful that another RSE is a great idea, even with the "no more of these afterwards" promise, but am willing to trust. I'm seeing a degree of openness that I haven't observed at WotC for almost a decade. That's nifty.

And thanks, all, for the kind words. This was fun.

What surprised me the most is that you look nothing like your ENWorld avatar. Not even any hints of pirates or cats in your real-world look at all. To be honest, I'm kinda disappointed.

Hmm, certainly possible. My guess is that the Abeir parts grafted onto Toril during the Spellplague will be sundered right back off again.

I do hope they keep the floating earthmotes though, those are neat.
