Even Level Skill Training [play test 2]

So, when you level to 2 and at every other even level, you can improve a skill bonus by +1. But do you also have the option of choosing an additional skill?

The text is sketchy but suggests you can choose a new skill, but the only rule specified is for the +1 bonus. And isn't a new skill at every even level, well, a lot?

And if you can choose an additional skill, must it be related to background?

From what I understand from panels and blogs and such there is currently no way to gain new skills, but they intend to implement one. I guess that's why the text is somewhat confusing.

Check out the Jack of All Trades specialty. It clearly implies that when you gain a new skill, you get trained in it at +3.

They weren't very explicit about it in the rules on the even-level skill training, but it does seem clear to me that's an option.

My understanding is that you get +1 to one skill at level 2.
That's the only option.

Jack of all trades is a Feat you can take to gain a new skill. And at this time, the only way to get a new skill after character creation.

The current text is ambiguous because it mentions under Backgrounds->Skills that you can take training in new skills, but then it is clear that the level-based improvement is +1. IMO it must be a skill you're already trained in. However see below...

There is: the Skill Training feat.

We also all know already that feats will be selectable at will instead of being granted strictly through specialties. Only a very strict DM wouldn't let you at least swap one specialty feat for Skill Training IMO...

I wonder if 1 trained skill really is worth a feat.

A 10th level character only has 4 feats and giving up one of them just to give my fighter Religious Lore seems too expensive.

But what about 2 trained skills for a feat? I think that seems a lot more reasonable.

Depends on the skill. Religious Lore may not be worth a feat, but Spot definitely would.

The feats we've seen so far are fun, but not overwhelming. I don't think skill training in one skill is out of line with those.

I'd allow the +1 at even levels to be put to another skill, it doesn't make it "Trained" until its at 3, but it would eventually get there. You'd get the bonuses for it, but if some task required you to be trained you wouldn't be able to do it.

6 levels to effectively have another skill at trained seems like quite a journey. Or you could spread them out and be working on a few other skills.

-- This was a small problem I had with 4th, outside of feats there was no way to get more skills.
