Is 13th Age stealing dnd next's thunder?

Is it just me, or is it too co-incidental that the lead designers for both 3e and 4e have had an RPG baby together at round about the same time as dnd next is all over the radar?

I'd say no.

I image that the average dnd player, has never heard of 13th age. At this point in time the average Dnd player hasn't heard of NEXT yet, and won't till it's ready to be sold.

Admittedly, when I read this topic I went "13th what?"

13th Age is cool, but it's a lot of wheel re-inventing. The RPG market is tiny and insular and doesn't stomach much more than a few systems at once. It's mostly coincidence that it was announced right about when 5e was announced, I imagine. D&D is the (hungry and sick-looking) elephant in the room, still, and [notranslate]Pathfinder[/notranslate] has been doing a good job eating all of D&D's food. 13th Age is going to have trouble cracking into that. I imagine it'll be something where the core books don't do too bad, but then there's a STEEP drop-off in interest.

I'd add Dungeon World as another game that's sapped interest in D&D Next. Certainly among the people I would playtest D&D Next with, we're just playing Dungeon World instead.

I agree with the other posters that 13th Age (and Dungeon World) only capture a tiny fraction of D&D's market. However, I think they've captured a greater share of early adopters - the kind of people who would otherwise be playtesting and who usually decide which game their gaming group plays.

I've vaguely heard of 13th Age, I've literally never heard of Dungeon World.
