D&D 5E Q&A February 14th: Lines, Finding Spells & Fighter Identity

Finding spells as treasure is not as cool when you (a) need to spend money to copy it, and (b) you cant even read it if you dont have read magic. Why dont all wizards get read magic for free?

You definitely have a point there about read magic for free since it is an integral part of what they do. I guess that if you receive magic weapons that you aren't proficient with it is a bit of the same thing although a feat or multiclass to gain proficiency is a bit more of a commitment than some gold to gain a spell. This isn't a problem in the wishlist of magic items the player gives the DM in 4E but it was more of a problem in other editions.

Please tell me I'm missing something?

A fair take on what they said?

"We’re taking a lot of steps in the game to make sure that everyone has access to all of the major pillars of the game in some capacity."

Unless you believe them to be lying, it sounds like they are heading in the right direction to me. We just haven't seen it all yet.

I don't think they're lying. I find it likely based on the article that we have different ideas of what "some capacity" should be.

I can see that point. But then I'd probably read it as "we will devote the same capacity, whether great or crud, to everyone." I didn't get out of it that they will spend little attention on one class' capacity while fully fleshing out others.

I said that in 1980 or so.... it took till 4e to see it in D&D.
Huh? As it happens, I was just doing a bit of spot-reading in the 1E DMG just a few hours ago, and it specifically says that MUs get Read Magic free. On the other hand, the roll 3D6 in order method of character generation is not one of the four ways mentioned therein.

A free spell (yet still not very free which takes up slots) always implied you dont have any lore.
Knowing and requiring a spell to do various things with magic that should be part of your skill at using magic.. like speaking the languages of magic and interpreting there cypher and sensing the flows of magic always seemed silly. The idea that you had to have a spell to even detect magic was anti-thematic as well...

Quite honestly the whole spells as ammo thing seemed pretty silly ... and still does. If there is an actual playtested and supported alternate magic system in Next that will be one if its few draws for me.

Uh... i was trying to help making a suggestion. If you feel "threatened" in some way , that's not my fault. Anyway, try and pick up mutants and masterminds then if you prefer a more familiar d20 experience. Geeze. Chill out dude.

The thing about warriors that is missing is that the traditional destiny/identity outside of combat is to become leaders of men. Kings, warlords, generals, emperors. Look at the list provided: "Gimli, Lan Mandragoran, Leonidas, Madmartigan (yeah, that’s right, I made a Willow reference), the eponymous Seven Samurai, and King Arthur."

Fully half that list are kings outright. And there are many other examples (Conan, Richard the Lion-hearted, etc.)

2E acknowledged this through the followers and stronghold rules. I would love to see Next work this into the fighter class.

Finding spells and finding maneuvers/feats have direct precedent in myth/legend... not sure what M&M / HERO / GURPS has to do with anything.
@Evenglare Should I recommend that you buy the reprints they have come out with if that is really what you are after?
