Sell me on Numenera

I don't know alot about Numenera but Monte Cook worked on 3E, and I liked that. What's cool about Numenera? I'm not much of one for settings, but what's the ruleset like? Is it worth picking up?

1. Science Fantasy done right- Like Lucas before him (yes, trust me it's a good comparison), Monte Cook has filtered the genre greats (Gene Wolfe, Jack Vance, Moebius) and come out with a superior setting, open for exploration.

2. Exploration and discovery is first - This is not a system geared primarily to fighting creatures. Yes, there will be encounters with creatures large and small that want to eat you and fighting is your only option. But sometimes, you are encountering things whose goals aren't to end your character- their existence in your general vicinity just happen to be hazardous to your health. How do you respond then? Your rewards are more tied to your discoveries. Sometimes a discovery is figuring out how to solve that scenario without fighting, and therefore getting those beings to aid you in your bigger goal. It's all about storytelling.

3. Simple mechanics that empower players and free GMs - Monte has really build a system that many have likened to being a blend between the options heavy mainstream games and the storytelling focus of the indie games and I couldn't agree more.

Check out NinthWorldHub.com and TF9W.com for a fan site and podcast that help fill in those points and give you a better picture of what playing Numenera will deliver in deep entertainment value.

I backed the Kickstarter - based on Monte's name - but I know next to nothing about it, either. I assume I'll find out when the book arrives! I'd be interested in hearing other EN Worlders' opinions, though.

Since the game isn't out yet, I'd love to see a comprehensive breakdown of the mechanics. I also backed the Kickstarter (for all the books), but wasn't a playtester so I know little about it.

I backed primarily off the strength of Monte's vision and my respect for his other work. :)

Due to NDA on playtest, you're not likely to find much....

...except for on ninthworldhub.com and what we've discussed in the TF9W.com podcast. There has been some lid off the NDA for core playtesters to share their experiences there.

(as I write this though, the Ning network that supports ninthworldhub.com is suffering a hopefully brief outage- first ever we've experienced.)

Monte has released boatloads of info about it on his blog (montecookgames.com) in addition to what we've covered in the podcast (we interviewed Monte Episode 3) and has been discussed by core playtesters on ninthworldhub.com
