The DMG.

Unless the DMG is the big book of optional rules while the PHB becomes everything needed to play. In which case they get moved to the PHB by default.

This is essentially my opinion, with the note that I entirely favor the PHB as core rulebook, DMG as Unearthed Arcana approach.

I forget, did B&N name it as a PHB? Of course, the name of their placeholder may be meaningless. Twould be nice if it turns out to be a Compendium or Cyclopedia.
 

I don't care about mystery and have no problems with wish lists.

I'd just rather the PHB be filled with other stuff, and the DMG tends to not have a lot of unique rules as it is.
 


Yeah, I really think it's down to how they divide the content. In a traditional PHB-DMG-MM split, the magic items should be in the DMG. But I would much prefer a single Rules Compendium with everything you need to play.
 


Where Should The Magic Items Go?


I always thought this would be better in a setting book, if the modular nature of the new D&D is to support high and low magic in equal measure, but also creatures should largely be in setting books from that stand point. Iconic creatures could go in the DMG and only player stuff in the player book (the usual plus streamlined combat that is pre-add-on-modules). You really don't need separate creature books with this arrangement.
 


If you add in some adventure and encounter building rules, you have the book of "Building Places to Go to Kill Monsters and Take their Stuff Manual". Which is a long-winded way to say "The Dungeon Master's Guide".

So I'm voting for a 2 book @ $50 each model, with the MM folded into the DMG, to go along with the PHB.

I really like this idea to be honest.

Although I think there is enough content you could still have a MM and DMG. The mm is all about building encounters and scenarios while the DMG focuses on rule options and world building higher altitude stuff.
