System for a 'Constantine'-inspired game?

What about a system...

...that does not come with a setting, but includes some simple (medieval?) weaponry...

...that includes a metaphysical trait for each character, which could easily be considered a tie to the netherworld...

...includes no core races, but builds characters off of an average human base, and allows unlimited reskinning...

...includes a highly customizable magic system, and highly modifiable rules in case the magic rules don't fit -just-right-?

So, interested?

Why, yes - yes I am.

I watched a "Constantine" TV show trailer. The main character sees ghosts and demons, I guess? Anything else that makes him different from Joe Shmoe? If not, your RPG won't need a lot of crunch. One big change you'll want to make: Constantine, as the main character, is going to be highly death-resistant, or else the producers wouldn't have a very long show. Best to make sure the main characters get an edge over everyone else in the world. Don't give them too much edge though, or the adventure will feel like a cakewalk.

You might want to design your own game rule too to make things Constantine-creepy. Since a demon can appear anywhere, you could try doing "demon checks" in every scene. With a demon check, each player rolls the same type of die, and hides his result. Players rolling a 1 may, sometime during the scene, initiate a demon encounter by acting creepy and making demon-noises. The creepier, the better.

That's a small part of the character (and pretty much the least of his talents), but I'm afraid that is probably what the TV show is going to focus on. The only TV channel that could possibly pull off a decent Constantine series is HBO, and even they would need to stretch their own boundaries of acceptable content. The comic is very good, intelligent, philosophical, etc., and is also very extreme, in every way possible. Nobody should have ever attempted to put it to film.

The TV show looks to be a little closer to the comics than the movie, but it's going to be like having Disney do Hellraiser.

Indeed. The setting is a horror setting based largely on the underside of Thatcherite Britain and is incredibly dark and gritty. Body horror, and the macabre.

And John Constantine himself? A genuine magnificent bastard, almost as dangerous for his friends as for his enemies. At one point he sold his soul to all three Dukes of Hell (collected on death), knowing that they all had grudges against him so none of them would give way to the other and the only way to prevent a civil war in hell was making sure none of them got him, so they brought him back to life.
