I'm sure the art will be outstanding but I"m hoping for more of a non-cartoony classic style over the dungeon punk or magna styles.

What about a bit of all three?

You could mix and match styles I think. Maybe one illo is really strong, traditional, frank Franzetta style while another is more manga and a third is computer generated.

Would people be happy with that?

I don't think marketing/branding would be happy with that, and honestly that matters.

Some of the newest 5E art released today is pretty nice:

I absolutely love the starter set cover art. It's my favorite piece of art for 5E revealed so far. I like the Tiamat adventure covers a lot too, and the Monster Manual cover. The Player's Handbook cover is dynamic, which is good, but seems an odd choice for the Player's Handbook. It seems to feature a monster most prominently rather than a character. Also, does this mean giants in 5E are getting totally resized yet again? I like the choice of a lich for th DM Guide cover, but I think this image is a bit lackluster, and just ok instead of amazing like the Starter Set or Monster Manual covers.

The PHB gets ever-so-slightly male-gaze-y, but it's not onerous to me, and that seems to be the only bit, so not bad and a big improvement over 4e's PHB!

I'm a fan of all the artwork, really. And I really like how the white dragon head on T looks in the Rise of Tiamat cover.

At this low res, I can't say for sure, but tentatively, me like!
