D&D 5E [Merged] D&D Next/5E Release Schedule Threads

Regarding your last point here, yeah, I don't see that happening either. After the core books have all been published, I don't see this happening. It's about as likely as somebody picking up the wrong game system.

I don't know how much you follow the Starcraft professional gaming community, but I do, and you are basically completely wrong. Beyond the absolutely simpleste strategies (build a spawning pool, build zerglings, attack), there isn't a single strategy that's the same in SC:BW and SC2. They kept a three-four units from each race*, and changed the 7-8 other. They completely changed the mechanics for what does more/less damage to other units. They completely changed the pathfinding algoritm which really changes how the game is played and they changed how high-ground works. There are so many weird micro things you can/have to do in SC:BW to make units work. For instance Muta micro in SC:BW is a small science in itself that made a player with the nick Jaedong famous (and really successful). You basically can't do the same micro in SC2.

*but they changed quite a lot of aspects with these units, especially the upgrades. Overlords in SC2 can't see invisible creatures as in SC:BW for instance.
I used to follow it, although pretty casually when I did. I guess I'm not disagreeing with you completely, just in my definition of iteration and what I would consider iterative.

I don't think there was an equivalent of advantage/disadvantage that was built into the foundation of SC2, or removing scaling ACs and difficulty checks or bringing back/removing monster stat blocks. I'm sure you might even agree with parts of what I'm saying but just have a different conclusion than me.

Sometimes I like to argue over silly distinctions and this is most likely one of those times. There are major differences between tabletop and video games and nothing will be clearly analogous from one person to another. We can probably chalk this one up to differing perspectives on iteration :)

Also note that you will be able to buy all of the books 2-3 weeks earlier from a local game store before you can buy them from Amazon. Wizards does have a deal where local game stores end up getting product prior to big retailers. So the PH officially comes out August 19th, but will probably be at your LGS for purchase at the end of July.

Am I correct in believing this is only true for FLGS's that participate in Encounters?

Nope; it has to do with another retail program Wizards of the Coast as a whole runs (Premier Store Program). Both of the LGS I've seen get stuff early do not do Encounters. Wizards launched a program that gets D&D products 2 weeks in advance to stores that run any kind of sanctioned events (usually Magic) and buy Wizards of the Coast products. It was designed as a way to give retail stores a way to compete with Amazon & other online stores.

Note; the Player's Handbook will be available on August 5th at local stores that are findable using the "store locator" on Wizards' website. This is two weeks before Amazon is allowed to ship books to folks who pre-ordered.

Oh! That is different. My local store definitely runs Magic tournaments... I assume they're sanctioned, but I guess I don't know. I'll have to go have a chat with them to find out! Thanks for the correction.

I'm sitting here looking at my 1st Edition, 3rd Edition, and 4th Edition Player's Handbooks, and none of them say anything about what edition they are on the front cover.

  • 1e differentiated itself from the previous edition by adding "Advanced." Of course they wouldn't have put "first edition" on the cover.
  • 2e has it right in the logo.
  • 3.0 I'm not sure since I don't have my 3.0 PHB any more, but 3.5 is boldly emblazoned on the front cover.
  • 4e has it on the back cover and right in the table of contents/credits page.

Because they are standing in front of someone asking them what they need to get into D&D. And that person tells them which book to order.
(snip)

Overreact much?

If a player goes online and buys a 3rd edition or 4th edition Player's Handbook, and then gets his or her friends together to play... WHY IS THAT A BAD THING? They're playing the game and enjoying the game. Who CARES if it's not a current edition? These boards are full of people aren't playing or aren't going to play the current edition. Playing an older edition is fine! At least they're playing!

Complaining that Wizards didn't put '5th Edition' on the book cover is just looking for reasons to complain about Wizards. And that's kind of ridiculous.

You missed my point completely, which is new player wants to join existing game, is directed to get latest PHB. I'm also impressed that you turned a response to my minor quibble into a multi-paragraph rant. Bravo. I'm hardly a WotC basher, if you would bother to check my history. Am I not allowed to have an opinion on their strategy?

It would be kind of nice, though, if there were some kind of easy identifier one could point to that distinguishes the current edition from previous ones. Maybe that's what the red "Dungeons & Dragons" banner is about. It's not terribly prominent on the cover, but it's pretty distinctive on the spine.

Thanks, at least somebody gets it.

This new iteration of the game, which represents the fifth edition of the rules, will allow players of all play styles to reunite around the game table, and we will simply refer to it as the Dungeons & Dragons (or D&D) TRPG. Where more specific detail is required, we will direct players to the appropriate fifth edition product.

Evidently WotC themselves get it, as well. Complaint retracted.

That's awesome! Do you have a source I can point my friends to?

My thoughts on 5E have been pretty negative through out the playtest, but I have to say seeing all the beautiful cover art and the price tag on the starter set has got me excited. I've decided to at least pick up the starter for some nostalgia fueled beginner level fun with my friends that we haven't had in a long time. We'll see how much we enjoy it after that and whether or not we will purchase the core books or anything beyond that.
