It looks like we're getting even more than Mearls had initially promised for Basic's debut. In fact, combined with the Starter Set and/or the last playtest packet, it looks like more than enough to get through until the PHB comes out (8 Aug at WPN stores) - at least for people like me who don't need or want a ton of options up front.

Combining the rules in the Starter Set with the character-building material in the first Basic .PDF packet, a group should be able to play a whole campaign from PC level 1 to PC level 20. So there's that.

Will WotC start giving out spoilers for the PHB after Thursday? (There would be no point in further spoiling the Starter Set after its physical release, would there?)

Edit: If they do, what would you want to see first? (Should this be a separate thread?)

Hang on, wait a second.

The adventures are taking place in the Forgotten Realms.

Drow are popular villains in the Forgotten Realms.

It is reasonable to assume that Drow NPCs will be in some/many/most of the adventures.

Drow can cast Faerie Fire.

The adventures are supposed to be playable with Basic rules only.

Basic rules don't have Faerie Fire.

How are they going to do this?

My guess?

Drow Faerie Fire in Basic is just a drow racial ability, something only drow can do, not a spell any spellcaster can learn. So it'll be in drow monster statblocks, but not as a spell reference just as A Thing They Can Do.

We didn't have a problem with "inspiration" when we only had seven races/classes, did we? So I don't think it takes any kind of expert to see that "COMBO MULTIPLIER!"-type claims are pretty monkey business-ish.

Whatever you say, boss. I was just making the point (in response to someone who is not you) that only five backgrounds doesn't mean there's a lack of character options. I'm not at all sure what point you're trying to make.

5B is expandable, beyond August. As adventures are released, any supplemental material needed to play them with 5B will be provided as free downloads. We don't know if ToD, for instance, has Drow in it but if it does, and if there are necessary Drow-related spells or monsters or magic items, say, that are in the 5A PHB/MM/DMG core books but not in 5B, then those will be downloadable for free so that 5B players can play the adventure. You will not need the 5A core books to play ToD.

@Thaumaturge : notice how I slipped in 5A to mean 5e Advanced Rules in contrast to 5B ? :D
