D&D 5E We Played 5th Edition for the First Time Last Night

Don't forget the "horde" rule. They were outnumbered 3-1, so that actually makes the xp value of the encounter x2, or 880.

Ok so it should have been half the number of monsters. We really need some more advice on monsters October is a long time to wait when the rules are there to play.

I think the basic rules will be getting an update with stuff about monsters & treasure in August when the PHB is released, or did I remember the announcement wrong?

You thought right.

At the launch of the D&D Starter Set, Basic D&D will include the material needed to create characters and advance to 20th level. In August, with the release of the Player’s Handbook, Basic D&D will expand to include the essential monsters, magic items, and DM rules needed to run the game, along with the rules for wilderness, dungeon, and urban adventuring. (The Starter Set already covers the aspects of these rules that you need to run the included campaign.)

Although it remains to be seen how many monsters we will get in the updated Basic PDF; hopefully it will be more than just the Starter set ones.

It would have to be, if the document is to support all levels of play.

Maybe not all at once, though.

I'm guessing that we will get a small to medium assortment of basic monsters for all level ranges. Enough to run a full basic campaign, but with enough cool stuff left for the MM to tempt us. :)

That's something I'm curious about: Do you double the XP value just for the purposes of designing the encounter, or do you actually award double XP as well? The latter makes more sense to me, but it's not really clear in that encounter design article.

That's a good point. I'd say, if the encounter is twice as difficult, you certainly should get twice the xp for surviving it.

Yeah, what I meant was that I hope they will give us more to work with than just the starter set monsters between the time the PHB and MM are released. We can probably expect much more than that eventually, just not sure when.

I do feel like time spent on character creation can be good or bad. If you're spending more time because you have lots of interesting decisions to make, I'm happy; if you're spending a lot of time doing math and allocating piddly bonuses, I'm less thrilled.

For example, the extra time it takes to choose a background, traits, bonds, etc seems like a great investment to me. The only thing you describe that does seem annoying is the time spent reading the spell list. I'm actually amazed the PHB is going to print without a single spellcaster that doesn't have to wade through a giant alphabetical chapter of spells to figure out how to blow stuff up. /rant
