D&D 5E A Bard Tease

2e was the last time that the Bard really shone. Half-Elf Bard/Cleric if you please. *wistful sigh*

4E Bard is also a total badass, but in a different way to 2E (tons of unique and powerful abilities instead of being a great generalist). 3E was just embarrassing, being almost the platonic ideal of the "joke Bard", and unceasingly mocked by D&D-related media (with much justification!). Even PF's Bard was less embarrassing than 3E.

I agree that 4e did a great job with the bard. It was one of the highlights of the edition (for me).

I must say that bit of fluff didn't do much to inspire me to play a bard. It should have concentrated more on a mythic archetype type of adventurer rather than talk about how they mostly have enchantment & illusion magic and some choose to sit on the sidelines, others don't etc. But I think the Bard has always suffered from a bit of an identity crisis in D&D, so this is not a new thing.
