D&D 5E Monk flurry of blows & ability mod question

So we know that normally you don't apply your ability mod to damage with a second off hand attack with a weapon. What about monk? Let's assume for a moment that the monk stays pretty much the same as the playtest versions in that they get 2 unarmed attacks, and can spend a ki for another 2 bonus attacks. Do all four get the monk's ability mod to damage? Or just the 1st and 3rd, and not the 2nd and 4th?

Nothing indicates that the monk's extra attack is off hand, so it appears he gets his full stat bonus on it. However, the monk only gets a maximum of 3 attacks because flurry of blows is a bonus action and so it the extra attack.

Ah, you're right. Never more than just one bonus action. That ability description could have been worded better ;) Something like, "As your bonus action, instead of one additional unarmed attack, you gain two."

You're making a big assumption when you assume the final version is like something from the playtest era. They're not going to want the monk to be substantially stronger than two weapon fighting.

With jgsugden's caveat in mind, the extra attack in the last public playtest IS NOT A BONUS ACTION. It is part of a single attack action. So is any extra attack granted by spending a Ki point. None of the attacks are considered offhand (especially since it might be a knee or head-butt).

If you multi-classed into fighter and used an Action Surge, you could quite possible make 6 attacks if you used the attack action as your bonus action. Possibly more if the rules allow spending more than one Ki point per action (unclear, but I think you can).

This may have changed in the final version (likely), and possibly even in the alpha. For stuff not in the Basic PDF, I never know which document people are referring to anymore.

This all changed in the alpha PHB, the monk extra attacks are all bonus actions. Obviously we will see what the final PHB is like, but I wouldn't expect that rule to change.

Actually the monk in the Alpha gets a regular extra attack at 5th level. So normally after that its two regular attacks and then a bonus action attack, or 2 attacks with your bonus action if you spend a point of ki for Flurry of blows. So up to 4 attacks with mod bonus and eventually 1D12 per attack for brutal damage. Oh and you can buff those attacks with ki points for stunning strike.
