D&D 5E Sphinx

So, not quite sure how to read this:

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the sphinx can take a lair action to cause one of the following magical effects; the sphinx can't use an effect again until it finishes a short or long rest

Does that mean the sphinx can't use the same effect until it completes a rest, or it can't use any effect until it completes a rest? I'm thinking it's the latter, but what does everyone else think?

I seem to remember there normally being 3 types of sphinxes in D&D. I guess they dropped the 3rd one.

Good question. I'd say the former. Otherwise they should have said "any" or "a lair action". Either way, it does scale back what I'd been envisioning. I missed that line the first time.

Wow, they did make a typical mythic creature interesting and exciting. I usually thought sphinxes are meh, but this one piked my interest. It's a source of good ideas and adventure opportunities.

I'm also glad adventurers can't just kill the Sphinx and take the stuff its guarding!

It's nice that three of its Lair Abilities can actually be used for beneficial effect, so its well worth negotiating with one.

I was a little disappointed in the lack of Tarrasque fluff. This is much, much better!

I'm guessing they wanted to keep the fluff of the Tarrasque light due to it's mysterious nature. I can deal with that.

Since the stats and illustration for gynosphynx are missing it's highly possible, that the Tarrasque has another page too with lair and more fluff.

Ah, I see. It would be interesting to see what the Tarrasque's lair is. I hope that's true.

I would say it only gets one effect before resting, but it could be read either way.
