One is prone, so I am guessing the "if they are prone you can stand in their space" old rule still applies?

Unrelated: I've always pronounced it "boo - let" like it is spelled, as opposed to the French way. I guess that's a more English-style pronunciation? Like "val - et" instead of "val - ay." Frankly it's a fantasy monster so you can pronounce it "fred" and no one could prove you wrong. :)

Maybe, but I agree with the notes in the EN World pronunciation guide that they screwed that one up and it should have a "T" and be pronounced "boo-LET". The "ette" ending in my limited knowledge of French has the "ET" sound. See "oubliette" and "Juliette" as well as English words "kitchenette", "cigarette", etc.
Agreed. If it's supposed to be pronounced "boo-LAY," then it should be spelled "bulet." I'm not aware of any language in which "-ette" has a silent T.

I just pronounce it "land shark."

Boo-LAY. (Same as it's always been pronounced since the pronunciation guide published many years ago in Dragon. Also found here.)

Not to disparage the pronunciation guide, or Gygax, but the "-te" at the end, makes it "BOO-let" or, more anglicanized, "BUHL-et"

"Boo-LAY" would be spelled "Bulet"...if following French/wider European pronunciation norms. Which, it has always seemed/sounded to me, like the originator was trying to do for [humorous?] effect. ;)

Be that as it may, I don't care how folks want to pronounce it, AWESOME entry! Classic D&D...and the halfling tidbit is a nice nod to the original.

Also, I'll just add, they are doing a great job with these previews in getting folks really jazzed for/hyping the MM release. Good job with the marketing...least from what I can tell, internet-wise.

Actually, your way is also the correct French way. Nobody who speaks French would assume that "bulette" should ever be pronounced "boo-lay".

I pronounce it just like "bullet" (the same as a projectile from a gun), because that's the only way to pronouce "bulette" that neither sounds ridiculous in English nor grossly misrepresents French. "Land shark" is also acceptable.

Correct. "-ette" is the feminine dimunitive, and should be pronounced "ET". The masculine diminutive is "-et" and is pronounced closer to "AY".

So, if they wanted "bool-AY", it should have been spelled "bulet" (or, you know, in some phonetic that approximates it). The examples against pronouncing it bool-AY are legion, and examples for that pronunciation are few.

It also brings up the question - if the bulette is the dimunitive, the "little bul", what in blazes is the full bul like? :)

Hardly anyone has ever seen baby bulettes. That is because they do not exist. Every hundred years or so, a lucky bulette that eats all its vegetables grows up into a terrasque. :heh: (The boards need an evil laugh smiley)

I'd never really considered this...I'll be sure to credit you.

I'm sure my players will also want to thank you when they encounter their first full "Bul." [pronounced "BOOL", obviously. :p:p]

<wrings hands maniacally>...good...very good...boowahaha...or should that be "Boo-WAY..."?:erm:
