Just got back the art from the very talented Mark Helwig, so here is the mushropod creature for my Felk Mor superdungeon. Feel free to use for your own personal games if you please.

Very cool, although the 8 tentacle attacks per turn may be a bit much. Definitely may use it in my upcoming campaign.

Thanks. I suppose this is worth clarifying since you're the second person to comment on the # attacks (in another forum as well someone did). The # of attacks (and therefore total damage potential) does seem like a lot, but you really need to keep into context the entire monster. For example, only 2 tentacles can ever attack one person at a time, and the creature is pretty much stationary with a very low AC. So it has 8 possible attacks because it has 8 tentacles, but the odds of it even getting anywhere near that many in a round is extremely implausible.
 

To be honest, my main concern would be that with such a low move, most of the attacks this thing is ever going to make in play is one Improvised Thrown weapon attack per round.

Unless it has some minions capable of dragging things to it, it is basically arrow bait.

Also, not sure what the severed rules mean by needing '10 (2d10) damage' to sever a tentacle? Does the number in the brackets get rolled when damage is done, or do you mean it has to be a 2d10 damage attack? Is that how severing is worded on other creatures? (Thinking Hydra might be a good one to look at).

Same format as hit points. I.e. each tentacle has 10 hp, or if you prefer random hp, roll 2d10.

I think the problem is, it is only as effective as its CR suggests if it gets an ambush.

Compare to Bugbears, that are effective as their CR suggests normally, and oh so much harder if they ambush you.

It might help if you gave it Proficiency on its attacks; but I still think it needs something beyond that tbh.
 

It's an ambush creature. It goes something like this...


  • Wait until entire party is in range.
  • Get surprise round.
  • Make 2 attacks per PC, latching onto most of the weaker PCs with two tentacles for 12 damage.
  • One of the weaker PCs breaks free, the other doesn't.
  • The other two PCs have their own problems breaking free.
  • First PC takes 6 damage, second takes 12.


Average L3 PCs have 26HP but of course this thing has latched onto the less melee focussed ones. So at least one PC is making death saves by the end of round one.

Well that's how I see it shaping up if played intelligently.
