Or you could just rule that the spell works like you want it to work for your game. Unless Mearls is in your gaming group, his opinion doesn't count as much as yours.

That is my plan for now, hence the take his statement with a grain of salt.

But once the errata comes out, I like to play as close to RAW as possible and will go by whatever is in that document. Until then if there is vague open to interpretation rules I always make the final call no matter who tweets what.
