The Flash Episode 3 - a review, Spoilers allowed

Although Episode 3 didn't impress me as much as Episode 2, The Flash is still maintaining a good pace and building an interesting narrative. They've been able to keep a good balance between the villain of the week format and the character development and 'mystery' underlying the story arch.

I liked last weeks villain Multiplex better than the Mist. Multiplex was a good challenge 'powers vs powers" for The Flash, whereas The Mist was put up as largely unbeatable except for the gimmick of 'run until he gets tired of chasing you' which was kind of lame and a lot of the work around from the team (Oh a sedative and cyanide - he must have been a death row inmate! and the Chekovs Antidote) seemed a little bit contrived.

The main part of the storyline concentrated on flashbacks to the accident and the relationship between Caitlin and Ronnie which was cool and helps build a bit more character for Caitlin. Ronnie getting caught in the Particle Accelerator sets things up nicely for his eminent return and the gang converting the Accelerator to a Metahuman prison was nice and should be fun for the future.

We got to see a quick Blue Devil easter egg and a zombie-ant geek out between Iris and Barry (Iris is still boring) all linked in to a Flash moment while Iris takes a phone call from Eddie.
The cops taking credit for the Flash's work leads to Barry moaning to Joe about "its not as if I want a museum" which I suppose was an in-joke for the fans. its up there with Caitlin describing her relationship with Ronnie as being like "Fire and Ice" and the Crimeboss being suffocated while claiming that "those thieves will draw their last breath". I also thought the Tahiti reference between Caitlin and Ronnie was funny too considering SHEILD even if it's most likely unrelated.

We also get more intrigue from Wells with his reference to waiting for centuries and the closing scenes are becoming more and more mysterious - just who is Dr Wells and what does he want?

So what did you all think?

(NB Felicity makes a Barry reference in todays Arrow episode too, setting up for next weeks mini-crossover - we get to see The Arrow straight after the Flash airs)

I am enjoying The Flash as well, more than I thought I would.

Is he confirmed to be returning? With the name Ronnie and the "fire" reference I was thinking Firestorm....

I missed this! Anyone care to enlighten me?

I am thinking Vandal Savage, maybe? Though I don't know how he got a paper from the future... Maybe from Professor Zoom? Maybe they will use our expectations against us and Wells is Professor Zoom instead of who we think...

I look forward to this season. Not sure why they did not cast Grant Gustin in the 2017 Justice League movie.

I'm thinking Wells is Zoom, too.

I do like the hyper metabolism stuff, even if his consumption requirements are not even close to what he'd need. (FWIW, I did a HERO PC with similar dietary requirements, and it was fun.)

Sadly, the Easter Eggs don't mean anything to me, but I am still enjoying the show.

Except, it seemed like the Mist was able to almost catch up to the Flash and for some reason despite the Flash's speed he was never able to land a punch because the Mist apparently could move that fast? I mean, if the Flash has enough time to stop, look at a judge's body and then look around while everyone else is basically motionless, how does the Mist move so fast? Seems like the gas was somehow able to move ridiculously fast. Or maybe I'm just missing something...

It looks like the reverse flash may be Harrison Wells.

Flash's powers work by via the speed force bending the laws of physics.

I know, I know, but still. ;)

As for The Mist, I'd say his mutation allowed for reaction time fast enough to let him desolidify almost instantaneously. But when he was chasing The Flash in the final fight, I'm sure The Flash was intentionally moving juuuust slowly enough to keep the Mist in pursuit, luring him in.

Besides, since the show has established that his metabolism prevents him from going full speed 100% of the time without nearly passing out, The Flash would be smart to economize his use of speed at all times.

I got the impression that the Mists true form was gaseous and the effort was in reforming to a solid state. The Flash couldn't hit him because he was gas, of course the last scene sort of challenges that unless the effort is akin to standing up vs blobbing (gassing) out ie not really hard unless you do it three times in a row while running.

I was also thinking Professor Zoom with Eddie Thawne put in as a red herring, but not so sure now. May be he's an entirely new character or even the future Barry. And do you think he deliberately caused the accident specifically to create The Flash?

and Blue Devil - Hell to Pay is on the Marquee sign at the movie theater.

He is; they've also cast Martin Stein as well, for the other half of Firestorm. I do hope that he turns out a hero instead of someone driven mad by being turned into energy - which of course is still a perfectly valid reaction to that, one would think :)
