D&D 5E TIME STOP SPELL (9º)

Example (typical 3.5)[Wont work in 5e due to concentration):

Wiz casts time stop, rolls 4. Now has 4+1 rounds of free time.

Timestop round 1: Moves 10 ft and casts summon monster 5.

Timestop round 2: Summon appears and is frozen. Casts delayed blast fireball targeting area near bad guy #1. (It is not affecting him immediately) Sets it to explode in 4 rounds.

Timestop Round 3: Cast Delayed blast fireball #2 targeting near bad guy #2. Sets rounds for 3.

Timestop round 4: Cast Delayed blast fireball #3 targetting near bad guy #3. Sets rounds for 2.

Timestop round 5: Move 30 ft, cast greater invisibility on self. DBF #1, #2, and #3 now will explode in 1 round.

Time resumes. All DBF explode. Summon monster can act. You are greater invis.

Unfortunately every one of those spells requires concentration. Casting each spell will cause the previous effect to disappear.

I do agree that summoning and delayed blast fireball should work in stopped time, the trouble is you can only setup one spell and must then spend the rest of your extra turns twiddling your thumbs.

Ah thx. DIdnt have my PHB handy. Its a good balance they added conc to DBF, makes sense.

And Conjuring takes a minute to cast each. That is 10 rounds. Far longer than a time stop. You can't even conjure one creature with a time stop active. It might have been worthwhile if it allowed it. It's not a level 9 spell any longer. Too many other limitations. It's maybe a 6th or 7th level spell at best useable for non-combat options like stealing an item and getting out or something similar.
 

In the worst most broken example I ever saw was as someone elses action a wizard cast celerity (gives you an out of turn action but makes you stunned on your next turn) then used a rod of greater extend to cast time stop... so 4-10 rounds, the first of witch is stunned (so 3-9 rounds) to cast all sorts of spells... I'm glad that will never again see play
 

time stop becomes the anti surprise spell, I get attacked, cast time stop, put up a buff drink a potion, repostion....

I like that example of strategy, though it makes me think, after the obvious nerf, it would not have hurt much if the casting time was a reaction instead of an action. It would reinforce the ne defensive/utility theme of the spell against the offensive (and arguably broken) past version (3rd ed and before)
 

You can't conjure a creature. You can't lay down Delayed Blast Fireballs. You can't cast a ritual. I don't see much reason to use this spell with your only level 9 spell slot. You can only cast one concentration spell at a time. It would have been nice if they had come up with something different for spell given all the changes to magic. It's useless as written or nearly so.

This spell sounds like it could be extremely powerful out of combat. The great macguffin is in a heavily trapped and guarded room. Time stop might enable you to ignore traps, bypass guards, grab the macguffin and get out.

It seems like a spell that you wouldn't cast every day, but would learn for particular planned tasks.

This. It is a terrible combat spell, but one of the most powerful exploration spells in the book.

As such, I don't think I'd often bother to prepare it unless I knew I'd have a reason to cast it. On most days, you will find there are far better uses for your 9th-level spell slot.
