D&D 5E A Board Game style Release Schedule

He said "leaks" were not authorized. Leaks generally mean material that was not meant to go out. What Mearls is saying is that those were leaks, WOTC did not ask anyone to release that information and someone did it without their permission.
Who said they need to ask WotC to release the info? It could be in their contract that once they get the ad copys and cover art they can put it on their website. No harm no fowl. No need for WotC to greenlight it.

Mearls saying that leaks are not permitted indicate that these were not leaks. Just the routine. Especially since it happened three times. Once I could understand it was a mistake. WotC just giving a warning to the retailer. Thrice it means it is just routine.

He says that often share information about products in the planning stages with retailers. The implication in that statement is that we don't currently know about any of those OTHER unreleased products so there was a reasonable expectation from WOTC that we would never find out about this one either. Someone released information they shouldn't have.
The information that got out was beyond the planning stage. The final covers for the two books were made public on January the second. http://www.enworld.org/forum/conten...k-and-Princes-of-the-Apocalypse!#.VQHwL_mG-T8

Have you ever been involved in publishing? Often the cover is set even before development starts. The initial proposal sometimes includes a mock up cover. Especially when you have a giant library of art, like large game companies often do. Just let it rest, man. None of your complaining is going to change anything.

Better check your facts, mate. The cover that was made public was the final cover art. http://www.enworld.org/forum/conten...k-and-Princes-of-the-Apocalypse!#.VQH0BfmG-T8

I'm not complaining. I'm having a debate with people about what happened. We have rhetorical questions like: "If a tree falls in the woods, does it make some sounds if no one is there to announce it?"

Where does Mearls say that some of the info shown to distributors were not ment to be made public? Mearls never said that. It is your personal opinion, not something Mearls said.
Where does Mearls say that he doesn't have an invisible dragon in his garage? Mearls never said that. If you argue otherwise, that is your personal opinion, not something Mearls said.

WotC, like other publishers, has to give distributors and retailers a lot of lead time with products, so they can place orders and manage their finances.

They used to announce things to the public prior to this, often as far in advance as a year. This has changed, and WotC is now announcing things only a couple months prior. So retail channels will often be aware sooner. This has been the case for a number of years, as can be seen by amazon and other web retailers often "leaking" a product to keen-eyed folk, with webpages made public too early. These are not authorized leaks or grassroots attempts to tease information and build hype. Just like most Apple gurus often know the specs and details of next-gen iProducts before they're "announced".

But it's been a while since a product was "announced" through it's product listing on amazon. So WotC is most likely asking that this not happen and trying to take steps to prevent this. So it's fair to say the Elemental Evil leak was indeed unauthorized.

Haha, funny. Except Mearls said "leaks are not permitted". So we can easily assumed that three leaks would not have been tolerated. If you want to argue that three leaks would have been tolerated, go ahead.

I'm not even sure what people are denying anymore? We know WotC made ad copys and covers for the books. We know they sent them to distributors. We know distributors put them on their website. We saw them. So what is the issue exactly?

“@monty_hedstrom: Any hints you can give of D&D content after Princes of the Apocalypse?”

Our marketing team has a big reveal in the works.

“@Barantor: Is it what you've been working on or is that a different thing?”

Right now I'm working on the next seven years of D&D stories.

My guess (actually it's more like my hope) is that WotC has purchased Gary Gygax's Castle Greyhawk maps and campaign notes from his widow. With these materials they'll release a mega-adventure set in the Castle and its environs, including The City of Greyhawk. This, in turn, will tie into the release of a 5th edition Greyhawk campaign setting.

Finger and toes are crossed on this one!

You guys think another setting is likely given FR is the new default setting and there are only three non-core products currently out/announced?

I think so. I like to think that they'll cover the high fantasy settings as D&D in the next several years.
