D&D 5E When do you think they will announce the next book?

Well, I'm glad the thought police vetted me.

Criticism of your comments is not the same as acting as the thought police. You dish out a heaping ton of criticism every week, and your complaint that even a small dose of it back equates with the thought police seems very shallow and vapid.

Anyway, Mearls said is that we can expect two APs a year.

No, he did not. Why are you immediately going back to the very issue we just discussed? Seriously Goldomark, what would compel you to do the very sort of thing we JUST finished with? Again, he said, "We're looking at two storylines a year." Not "You should expect two APs a year," but "[WOTC] is looking at two storylines a year". There is no assumption there that readers should therefore create an expectation that what WOTC is looking at is something they should expect will happen. Much like, as I said before, if I tell you a couple months in advance that I am looking to arrive at a party at 8, that does not mean you should EXPECT me to arrive at 8, when months later the party happens. Looking at something is not the same as creating a reasonable expectation of a commitment to that thing.

Nope, when I say people, I mean people. That you do not identify with people is a separate issue.

I do identify with "people" (and thanks for that snotty comment by the way), but you're speaking for yourself and nobody else. So why would you claim anyone else is behaving the way you are behaving concerning this issue? It's you Goldomark - not "people" but "Goldomark". Unless you want to name these other people you're speaking for, you represent just you.

I thought the next storyline was confirmed as being Wonderland-themed?

And I'm pretty sure we'll be getting a Lolth-themed one and a Ravenloft-y one soon. Possibly another foray against the giants, too, though they may wait a while given that Paizo are doing that Path as we speak.

Against the Giants remake and a Lolth-themed adventure could possibly be the same thing.

Question: Has anyone else here played Gygax's original EX series Wonderland modules? How are they?

He did. The question the reporter asked was how often can we expect APs:
14. How often can we expect to see a story line like Tyranny of Dragons? Once a year? Twice a year?
.

Mearls answered two a year.
We're looking at two storylines a year. Right now, we have plans laid down for stories up through 2018.

It is pretty clear and there is no place for interpretation. Of course, the door is open to change. I do not contest that.

I hope they release something new, versus trying to take an old dungeon or theme and revamp it. FR is a huge place, it should not be hard to pick some niche or corner on the map that has not been explored. I was not impressed with Tyranny of Dragons. I am still reserved if Prince of the Apocalypse is any better. And having a decent set of adventures is the entry price for me to continue with 5E long term. The price of the APs are prohibitive as well. I would prefer a series of adventure modules via old school, so if the first couple don't pan out, then I have not wasted my investment on a 300 page book.

I agree, something new or newish would be nice, but I'm afraid something old will be release. The themes so far have been dragons and elementals. Undeads as a theme doesn't sound to far away. If we say undeath Ravenloft comes to mind. That could mean Castle Ravenloft. Again. Barovia would make a great sandbox setting, the boarders help a lot. But it has been done three times already. Nostalgia as its limits. Ravenloft as a lot to offer. What about Malocchio Aderre and the Gentleman Caller? Those are NPCs with lots of plot potential. What would be worse is if they transplant Ravenloft in the Realms or try to turn a Realms vilain into one of Ravenloft's Darklords (Manshoon the vampire necromancer as stand in for Strahd).

Then they could just go undead theme in the Realms with cultist trying to summon Orcus...

I have! ;)

They vary between fantastic, whimsical encounters (mostly in Dungeonland) and a lot of combat encounters with things that appeared in the books (mostly in The Land Beyond the Magic Mirror). I've run them a couple of times, both in their original form and in a 3E-converted version. There are some fairly arbitrary and deadly encounters, but - especially in Dungeonland - there are a lot of encounters where the monsters are trying to trick the players, which is great for keeping them on their toes.

One of my favourite encounters is with the caterpillar, which I recently adapted for use in The Rise of Tiamat. (Yes, there's a point when it was appropriate!)

Cheers!

I suspect WotC will move on to another setting after PotA... at least I hope so. I really like the Realms but it would be better to spread the AP love around a bit to make things more interesting.

Dragonlance will probably not be next since we've already had a dragon-based AP theme with HotDQ and RoT. Eberron will probably be next which doesn't excite me all that much... it's a good setting and well done but I'd much prefer something like Planescape or something horror themed like Ravenloft. Dark Sun would be cool too.

And, I want some setting books too! They could do one setting a year in addition to their APs, it wouldn't kill them.

They are emulating Paizo with two APs a year, they could go a bit further. Paizo does one "traditional" AP and then one "experiemental" AP a year. Iron God is experiemental and Giant Slayer traditional, for example. WotC could do one Forgotten Realms AP and one other setting AP.

Yeah, I like Eberron, but at some point I realized I discribed it as "it is like the Forgotten Realms, but..."

Ignoring campaing settings is a mistake. It is one of D&D's strenght and identity. Maybe if they can bust that 15 employees hard cap by generating enough money they'll be able to put out source books. I just have doubts about that with their current business plan of two APs a year and no PDF.
